For BARBIE DOLL lovers
Who says geeks can't be `girlie' girls? Meet the new Barbie, a computer engineer. With more than 124 careers on her resume, Mattel's iconic doll Barbie has got her 125th career -- computer engineer -- voted for by over half a million Barbie fans.
The world's most popular doll, which celebrated her 50th birthday last year, is now the new brand ambassador of a supposedly male-dominated profession.
In her latest job, the size-zero glam doll sports a nerdy look accompanied by the requisite gadgets.
She’s been an astronaut, rock star, dentist and veterinarian. And now Mattel’s (MAT) Barbie doll is going to be a computer engineer.
Computer Engineer Barbie will debut in winter 2010. The company hopes the doll “inspires a new generation of girls to explore this important high-tech industry, which continues to grow and need future female leaders.”
To create an authentic look for techie Barbie, designers worked with the Society of Women Engineers and the National Academy of Engineering to develop the wardrobe and accessories for the doll. She wears a binary code patterned T-shirt and is equipped with the latest gadgets including a smart phone, Bluetooth headset and laptop travel bag.
If you thought techies are sans style, the Barbie's geeky look will surely surprise you. The doll, known for her characteristic pink attire, sticks to her pinks in the new Geeky avatar too.
The geek chic wears a black fitted leggings and a lime-green top patterned with binary code (0s and 1s), worn under a white colour waistcoat with blue collar. The computer engineer Barbie has her trademark blond hair.
Last month a poll was launched on the Mattel website to choose Barbie's next job. While the largely girls' vote fetched Barbie a career of a News anchor, popular vote winner was the computer engineer Barbie.
The News anchor Barbie too sports the usual pink look with a microphone and a News folder in her hands.
Barbie which came to life in 1959, was named after creator's daughter, Barbara. The iconic doll has represented over 50 nationalities and is sold around the world.
Barbie has held 124 careers since 1959, spanning from a nurse to rock star, veterinarian to aerobics instructor, pilot to police officer, Stewardess to Paratrooper.
The best-selling Barbie doll ever was 1992 Totally Hair Barbie, with hair from the top of her head to her toes.
Barbie enjoys a huge fan following on the Internet too. She has the fastest growing fan base in Facebook history -- 80,000 fans in six weeks. Over 1,000 YouTube Channels are dedicated to Barbie.
