Ban on sale of birds at central market Doha
THE Doha municipality has decided to discontinue the sale of pigeons and other birds at the central market since this activity has been shifted to Souq Waqif, according to a report published in the local Arabic daily Arrayah.
The free public auctioning of pigeons and other birds that used to be a popular event on Fridays has also been discontinued because this will also be done in Souq Waqif where a special zone has been demarcated for this purpose in consultation with the Souq authorities.
While the municipal authorities have appealed to the public to co-operate in this matter many members of the public have expressed strong reservation on this move.
They feel that it will affect the general cleanliness and the hygiene of the market. It would be advisable to move only a part of this activity to the Souq Waqif area, they said.
And some of them also said that the central market is the ideal location for this activity and it has been a traditionally famous place for birds.
