5 star hotels have public lobbies and dont allow just ' anyone in ' so why should Malls. Do u want Loius Vuitton to resemble a market place full of throat clearers and body odour!? Nooooooooo - it is the fault of the employers for not providing recreational facilities for their employees and it is unfair that we posh people in the City should have to tolerate the Friday invasion of hoards of throat clearers yah!? One thing I have to say is kudos to the Gulf Times for being so harsh with the malls about this. I think if anyone should be organizing the boycott it should be the Times.

There ain't much to see in these malls...or ain't much to buy also...

I only go to Dunkin' Donuts/Baskin & Robbins or Toys 'R Us.

At least I can see more in these places. XP

the single men (yup, mainly the low-income earners ---irregardless whether they're INDIANS, NEPALIS, BANGLADESHIS AND FILIPINOS).

Other nationalities (westerners don't get treated this way. I think GULF TIMES already made a FRONT PAGE news article proving this point...

parking is still A PROBLEM...and I can't AFFORD to buy those clothes in those shops...whehehehehe

Even if I do, i'd rather go to some shops that sells good clothings. I don't go far from where i live, knew some shops around here.

sharp shooter, i agree with you, some of these people are trying to get in contact with maids, i have even heard that they lure them into prostituion and have rings.

There is no easy solution to the problem, perhaps the companies who hire them in thousands and are making profit from tehir labour shud be made to provide them recreational facilities.

i hate malls by the nature...i rather NEVER go to the malls back home.. ...but since there is no any alternative to malls in qatar, i try to go there as rare as i possible...let's say once 1-2 month is more than enough of "malls in qatar" for me...

i stopped going to malls on friday. you can shop with ease on weekdays.

im not sure if they will be affected by boycott. and for how long? people need some things available in these malls too...

somebody influential must back up plight of these bachelors. i think family day can be done on thursdays since there are companies who operate on mornings every thursdays...

I already boycotted since ages, going to Malls ALONE w/o hubby w/ me.

Verbal harassment were not experienced from those unfortunate laborers BUT instead, from those bunch of ALIENS who think ALL their fingers are in the same size. Grrrrrrr!

symphatize with these "bachelors", whetehr themselves alone here or with family here in Qatar, should join these "bachelors" in boycotting ONE PARTICULAR MALL to dramatize the seriousness of the matter.

It's the only way to get their attention!!!!

...there must be a huge complains against lower income bachelors (e.i. harassing woman) to make the authority enforce this malls policies? My humble guess.

it should be done by all, but how, I don't know. One mall should be boycotted by all "bachelors" say in one or more months, on all days until they realize the mistake they are implementing. These mall should realize that they need their people to let the businesses inside them survived.

If this will not be done, all the "shouting", "big banging" and "human rights advocacy" will go useless. Because these malls mentality is , "anyway, these bachelors will still go here or find a way to visit us in other days"

the authorities should change day-off for the so-called bachelors...

but for one thing, i appreciate them not entering the malls during family days...there are times they would just crowd the area esp carrefoure. they aren't buying anyway...they just wanna take a look at women...and i had a prob once with a laborer who simply walked through my family and touch my housemaid...what if they do the same to my wife or daughter??? am sure family men out there would have had same experience...this way, we protect our women...

even in play areas, they just wanna stay there just to make some friends with our housemaids...so is this what you want?

well sorry...the mall management is right of banning them on holidays....

I have already started boycotting Malls on Fridays long time ago. I have not stepped in to a mall on a Friday for the last 3 years.

I think they would care very much if enough people like me boycotted the Malls. The Malls want people like me to go there. They want people in senior management positions with children and high disposable income who can spend a lot of money. If enough people like me stopped going to the Mallsthey would care very much. remember that Qataris only account for 20% of the total population.

This is very common here and has been discussed before..Its pretty disgusting, and maybe something should be done about it, since it always pops up here on QL...These poor labourers, used and abused..

dress down like an Asian labour... then u cud be stopped. May be u r right... the 'bachelor' labours have prolly stopped coming.....labours they may be, but surely they too have self esteem.

I went to villagio last night, they were not stopping anyone. May be they are satisfied now that "bachelors" are not coming anymore.

...but nothing is being done about it. The Malls get away by saying its a family day and are not being racist. The suffers are the lower class labour who are the ones who have built the houses ( & the malls) we live in. If a boycott helps, am happy to do it. How can we spread this message around. Is there anyone to lobby for the poor labours. Sad. Sad.

with all due respect, who would care if you boycott?

more than 50% of shops are owned by ALSHAYA group- which is Kuwaiti.profit is not based on qatar alone as his franchise covers qatar, saudi, bahrain, UAE, Jordan & Egypt.

Not to mention one qatari writer (Nora al saad, for your reference) suggested once in her column that there should be dedicated days for Qataris at shopping malls ;)

its more a question of a personal protest. If enough people do it, the Malls will soon get the message. The problem is wider than just the malls though. The reality is that the malls do not want or need the laborers because these guys only earn in a month what some of us will spend on a dinner. These guys are economically irrelevant to the Malls.

The real issue is that they deserve to be treated better and to have a better quality of life. They need places to go and things to so that don't cost money.

That is a good idea! I'm up for that.. well, I don't go to the malls during the weekends anyway. I think Fridays are for people who don't have time to go out (especially these poor laborers).. the rest of us, we can always go to the malls during weekdays after work. Can we? Or perhaps on a Saturday?

It sounds like a good idea . But you and other experienced QL members have to organize this boycott .

In addition , I also invite single ladies to boycott the apartheid called "Family Day" .

Here is a great idea. Lets make Friday a 'family day' at the malls. Because after all, families can only go to the malls every day of the week while these poor laborers only get one day off.

This is an example of great thinking.

If there is going to be apartheid. At least do it properly and give these poor people some facilities so they have something to look forward to on Friday.

Personally, I think that all of us who can get into the malls on Fridays should boycott them in protest. I think that may change some attitudes. After all, we all know that this society and pretty much every other is all about money.

I faced the same thing in Vilagio ..

I also got out for a smoke when i see the guard is rejecting some asians from entering .. so i thought i would be in trouble ..

but i entered again without any prob. I was going to ask the guard .. "Hello! I'm single too .. why u didn't stop me" "And why it's visible that there are some Asians inside"

On wut bases they r rejecting ppl I don't know ...

The more worst.. Friday morning around 4:00 am .. I was really bored so i thought about going out to cornich

When i found labourers are sleeping on the cornich ..many questions where in my head

1- don't they have room to sleep in

2- Are their sponsors happy now with the money and those ppl are like that

3- Does any body know how those ppl were suffering

4- Shall i report them to the police so that it might be better for them to go back home OR at least do something with their sponsors

5- Shall i take a picture of them and take it to local papers ...

Sponsors and companies here they don't know how those ppl r living or suffering

May be they don't have hearts any more

Isn't it enough to be without minds .. Also to be without heart.

That's really terrible .. I wished if i can do something for them ..

Yesterday I visited City Center with two of my colleagues . While they were shopping , I went to the outside of the mall for smoking . While I was smoking , I saw Asian people rejected by guards due to Friday is family day . And I thought " Oh s**t ! Single males are refused !I can't go inside back!" . I entered back without problem , but while I was entering , I saw an Asian couple who were rejected by guards without any reason .

I also have to say that I saw some Asians in City Center . So , I don't understand the standarts of entering city center . Is it related about your race or your money spending capacity ? Whatever it is , it is a shame to izolate people for their race or income .
