Are you a closet thief ?

Why do people take bathrobes and towels from hotels? Why do people take forks from restaurants?

I don't know about you, but I have a sort of obsession with stealing hotel soap! I actually creep up on the housemaid's trolley and take extra shampoos, bath creams, tea, coffee, milk, whatever!

I'm NOT a thief by nature, so why is this stuff so irresistible?

A friend once confessed to me he collected so much soap over his years of traveling that he had to stop because the basket his wife bought for him to house it all was overflowing! :D

Most hotels expect that you will take the soap. They plan on it. But there are other things that they expect you to take too, so except for the shower curtain, think about things that start with the letter "S."
• Soap.
• Shampoo.
• Shower gel.
• Shower cap.
• Sewing kit.
• Stationery.
• Shoe Shine Kits.
• Slippers.

I've had the little pots of marmalade and jam (unopened ones) off trays left in the corridors before now! And I hate the stuff!

What makes us, otherwise law abiding citizens, do this?
What is the most extraordinary object you have left an hotel with?

(Legend has it my sister and her husband once smuggled a 6' stuffed bear into the boot of their car many moons ago)!

Let's hear who has sticky fingers ...

I haven't read all of the above, but in general, everything which is considered a "consumable", is yours, you have paid for it, you can take it.

Everything else, (solids) and (washables) are not yours. Like the Bible (may be the Kuran here) for example, is not yours.

Blankets from planes... are not yours.

When i first arrived, my company put me up at the Ramada for 3 nights. On my way out i wanted to take the Marhaba book which i found very handy for first timers. So i asked at the front desk, and the girls were more than happy to let me go with the book (because it is a sort of consumable, it has to be replaced after a few weeks or so...). Cheers.

The only two things I take is the pen and pad on the desk, and that's to remember the hotel, I still have all the pens and it's just nice way to remember all those experiences :-)

let's hope she gets enough cruet sets with Santa's face on them for all of us! On second thoughts ... maybe not.

What I REALLY want is for someone to admit to leaving an hotel or a restaurant with something, as a souvenir, which they really SHOULDN'T have left with. (and I don't mean HIV !!) sheesh one has to be so careful how to phrase things these days lol

I'm talking about the fact that people are obsessional about taking anything that isn't nailed down - freebees or NOT!

No, it's not stealing, I just wondered why we seem to take it when we don't NEED it! I honestly grab tea bags off the trolley in the corridor so's I can have another cup of tea (they only ever give you 2 bags) although I don't stretch to filling my pockets with the teabags to take home !!! lol

Although, the sweetex I might - but WHY. It's that something for, supposedly, nothing?

Toiletries and fruit baskets are complimentary so I don't think it will qualify as stealing.

---> I took all of those except the last 2. Had million of shower cup on my dressing draw. Hubby normally put his foot down after a week in Shangri-La Singapore he will ask either i take the hotel's toiletries home or more handbags / shoes.

tooth pick holder from The Mandarin Hotel, Hong Kong

But I think my pride and joy is a solid silver "Knickerbocker Glory" Sundae Spoon! which someone in my family must have knicked from a hotel in the 1930s/40s on holiday on the South Coast of England in the days before plastic spoons and 'thieves'? lol

Guess that's why plastic took over :P
