Are we offended too easily ?
Are we becoming a society of sissies. Taking offence too easily ?
A woman who put up posters saying "Don't be a tosser! Take your litter home" has angered her local parish council.
But Stamfordham Parish Council called the signs "inappropriate" and "offensive" and wants them taken down.
I certainly didn't find the sign insulting - Would you ?
What offends you and why ?

Please see this .. About 3 minutes in ...
This is a deep question which requires a deep answer. We are complicated beings and carrying a lot of information in our DNA which influences how we think, feel and react to things and circumstances. Some attitudes /actions towards certain ideas, things or others have been instilled in us from our cultural backgrounds. We may not consciously be aware of our inner prejudices or our sensitivities until we do some real inner reflection.
people need to know what that feels like in order to break free from their sensitivity and prejudice. Helping people understand their deeper feelings is what I do
Not only British people litter. This can apply for over here to and us brits can explain the pun!
So right Diamond.
I'd rather not have to explain what tosser means to my children.
I do think that nowadays we are much LESS easily offended. Things that are everyday and commonplace now would have been socially unacceptable even a generation ago. This goes across all cultures.
If it keeps British people from littering and spoiling their cities with rubbish then ok maybe. "Tosser" has sexual meaning, so maybe another choice of terms would be best, but this seems OK in UK nowadays.
Can I Tink Er Bell
Which could be read Can I Tink her Bell.
Quite funny and humorous and getting the point across..:)
Thanks Britexpat. Missed your opinions too.
Back to topic...i don't think we are more easily offended, no, but with regards to the sign, it's a public statement using a slang derogatory word. i can see how that would offend many.
Personally, whilst I find the sign cleverly funny, I'm generally offended at people who assume something about me based on who I am and where I come from. I also tend to get offended at unfair comparisons specially when it involves my child.
That said a lot of us tend to be overly sensitive but again that too will be in the minds of the beholder. What I'll perceive as offensive and unfunny may appeal to others as the contrary and vice versa.
In general, I doubt it either. But in particular, it depends on the subject and the surrounding aspects of what to be perceived as "offensive".
"Pride" is somehow the culprit, if an "ego" was touched, then the reaction comes out. Unless the bad intent is very clear!
This would be considered acceptable in Australia or even in the US but the Brits supposedly consider themselves more sophisticated than the rest of the world...
In my personal opinion, it would be effective because of the pun in the words.
1 brit council that would be...not all brits.
Back to topic.. D you agree that we take offense too easily and ave forgotten the old maxim regarding "sticks and stones"
All is well. Enjoying the London sunshine at present.. Missed your postings. Hope to have you around for a long time :0)
(wink). Lol!
Flor, relax...I am sure there are many things in your language , that if translated into English ,I would not understand. Has nothing to do with intelligence...just what a person happens to pick up along the way.
Hi Britexpat, long time no see. How's life treating you?
Calm down Flor...it's not worth getting into a lather about it. It's just a funny little thing.
As I said, I am not familiar with this particular "slang word" so my apology, PLEASE excuse my ignorance, INTELLIGENT people! Thanks again, NM.
only for those who can comprehend.
And actually, the humour in it jumps right at ya...If you know the terms.
You are welcome Flor.
Actually as per original post by Brit (without the link) and the title he used, it's hard to see the humour in it.
Thanks nomerci lol
ok, Flor, a "tosser" is an English slang term for a not so delightful person....BUT, "tossing" is also another word for throwing away things. So, In this sign we have a "word play". Therefore it is humourous.
but I find no humour in it. Well maybe, I am not familiar with wordings. You are!
THe whole thing is full of humour to lighten up the very real problem of littering.
I like it anyway.
I am on the side of the lady who posted it. I find it full of humour and to the point. It sends a clear message and should not be regarded as offensive.
are you on the side of the lady who posted it, or you are the people who opposed the postings?
I find no humour here, it's a serious problem by the community and a lady did a good move by making those signages and posting it publicly!
Welcome back..
I would agree with you. I just wonder why anyone would not see the humour and intention behind the message..
But again, some people above find it amusing! Maybe they are part of the council!
I find this less offensive than huge adverts of nearly naked and very suggestive people...i don't like my children seeing that.
Shame... she would have been a great asset to QL ;)
No she's dead

Mary Whitehouse is still alive?

lol, funny! Good initiative.
Of course we are, silly things like this are just annoying. The religious crazies who get offended at the slightest thing and 100s die in Pakistan and elsewhere! People need to learn to just let things go
you are making something out of it. Anyway, I know where will this end, you'r the good guys and I am.............
...The better one! Lol!
Will always get someone trying to start something somewhere.
then it should be in the funnies section!
So you think the whole council was a JOKE? They are what, a bunch of ......?
Flor, it was just meant to be an amusing post to make people laugh, you dont have to make something of it all the time
?
So this is in UK? So this must be in UKliving.com! LOL!
Some landowner in uk fedup with clearing up after 'tossers'
Haha....brilliant! Great slogan! Some people should get a life!!
any link?
What's the background of the community?
It depends on Person IF He/She takes it in a Positive Way or Not...
I don't see any harm in putting that Poster....
I found it amusing and something that makes you look twice - and perhaps take heed..
Quite funny really. Certainly makes people think too
