Are we offended too easily ?

Are we becoming a society of sissies. Taking offence too easily ?

A woman who put up posters saying "Don't be a tosser! Take your litter home" has angered her local parish council.

But Stamfordham Parish Council called the signs "inappropriate" and "offensive" and wants them taken down.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I certainly didn't find the sign insulting - Would you ?

What offends you and why ?

This is a deep question which requires a deep answer. We are complicated beings and carrying a lot of information in our DNA which influences how we think, feel and react to things and circumstances. Some attitudes /actions towards certain ideas, things or others have been instilled in us from our cultural backgrounds. We may not consciously be aware of our inner prejudices or our sensitivities until we do some real inner reflection.

people need to know what that feels like in order to break free from their sensitivity and prejudice. Helping people understand their deeper feelings is what I do

Not only British people litter. This can apply for over here to and us brits can explain the pun!

So right Diamond.

I'd rather not have to explain what tosser means to my children.

I do think that nowadays we are much LESS easily offended. Things that are everyday and commonplace now would have been socially unacceptable even a generation ago. This goes across all cultures.

If it keeps British people from littering and spoiling their cities with rubbish then ok maybe. "Tosser" has sexual meaning, so maybe another choice of terms would be best, but this seems OK in UK nowadays.

Thanks Britexpat. Missed your opinions too.

Back to topic...i don't think we are more easily offended, no, but with regards to the sign, it's a public statement using a slang derogatory word. i can see how that would offend many.

By FathimaH• 24 Mar 2012 22:54

Personally, whilst I find the sign cleverly funny, I'm generally offended at people who assume something about me based on who I am and where I come from. I also tend to get offended at unfair comparisons specially when it involves my child.

That said a lot of us tend to be overly sensitive but again that too will be in the minds of the beholder. What I'll perceive as offensive and unfunny may appeal to others as the contrary and vice versa.

By flor1212• 24 Mar 2012 22:29

In general, I doubt it either. But in particular, it depends on the subject and the surrounding aspects of what to be perceived as "offensive".

"Pride" is somehow the culprit, if an "ego" was touched, then the reaction comes out. Unless the bad intent is very clear!

This would be considered acceptable in Australia or even in the US but the Brits supposedly consider themselves more sophisticated than the rest of the world...

In my personal opinion, it would be effective because of the pun in the words.

Flor, relax...I am sure there are many things in your language , that if translated into English ,I would not understand. Has nothing to do with intelligence...just what a person happens to pick up along the way.

ok, Flor, a "tosser" is an English slang term for a not so delightful person....BUT, "tossing" is also another word for throwing away things. So, In this sign we have a "word play". Therefore it is humourous.

By flor1212• 24 Mar 2012 21:13
flor1212

but I find no humour in it. Well maybe, I am not familiar with wordings. You are!

THe whole thing is full of humour to lighten up the very real problem of littering.

I am on the side of the lady who posted it. I find it full of humour and to the point. It sends a clear message and should not be regarded as offensive.

By flor1212• 24 Mar 2012 21:06
flor1212

are you on the side of the lady who posted it, or you are the people who opposed the postings?

I find no humour here, it's a serious problem by the community and a lady did a good move by making those signages and posting it publicly!

By britexpat• 24 Mar 2012 20:57
