Arab ladies cleverer than scientists..

So that's why they wear blac Abayas......

People who want to stay cool in the sun and protect themselves from harmful rays should wear dark clothes instead of bright tops such as Hawaiian shirts, scientists claim.

Despite being uncomfortable in the blazing sun, scientists from the Cataluna University in Barcelona claim that dark clothing offers better protection from harmful UV rays.

“The colour of cotton woven fabrics is a factor that has a remarkable influence on their protection against ultraviolet radiation,” said Dr Ascension Riva, who led the study.

They found that dark blue offered the best protection while yellow coloured cotton was the worst.

Most people when they go on holiday, their clothing will protect them from the sun while sunscreen was all they needed to wear on exposed skin.

But clothing such as thin white T-shirts, skimpy tops and wet swimming costumes usually fail to protect us from harmful ultraviolet rays.

Clothing manufacturers could use information from this study to better design sun-protective clothing, Dr Riva said.

sunida, how will one swim wearing an Abaya?

tried wearing black and white stripped stretch clothes in the sun. Under the white lines my skin got a darker shade but under the black lines it did not change. So yes I looked like a zebrs. since then I only wear dark clothes for the sun because I don't want the sun to affect my skin. thats why I think that an Abaya is the best swimming wear. With total protection for the whole bodey! I hate putting suncreams becase it blocks my skin cells and does not allow it to breath, so an Abaya is fresher for my skin. LOL!

Khattak, I'm inclined to think that Arabs may indeed be cleverer, on average, than Westerners. Cleverness being innate rather than learned and a harsh environment tending to weed out the less adept members of society. But the Westerners who come here may, on average, be better educated and therefore appear to be cleverer. I've met many clever people from both cultures.

I used to think it was awful and unfair it was that women here wore black and the men wore white, but then I realized it doesn't matter because nobody here (none of the locals) are outside for any length of time in the sun and heat.

i doubt it, because we live in pretty much a free world today and mere decision to apply something deemed suitable to one on another is naturally impossible and hence the riots or protests. but ofcourse i cannot deny that it is not being practiced.

debates will exchange motives of different ideas and extract valuable information. it will create genuine followers of any given idea or policy.

however what is important is respect and tolerance in any debate with equal opportunity to voice the ideas or principles. without it you can call it a mess or immature mud fight thats only spreading more dirt.

that sure is the attribute of wisdom, without it, we call it ignorance. curiosity is the guide to knowledge but the fuel of patience keeps it moving. whats more important is room for debate/discussion in light of respect and tolerance.

They actually make UV protectant material nowadays, yes in white. I imagine that would be a damn sight "smarter".

Scientists today release reserch showing that black full length abayas actually improving dancing ability, Dr Bob Seger said 'whether its getting down to boogie nights in the pearl or YMCA at the Crystal lounge, the black abaya gives these ladies a clear advantage over those under dressed westerners and Filpinos. However the advantage disappears in relation to the number of barcadi breezers consumed.....'

Sandeep, I suppose this is the outcome of an experiment measuring the transmission of UV wavelengths through different colours (and probably thicknesses) of dyed cotton. While the results are hardly surprising it may not have been looked at in this way before and pointing out to people that they need sun protection under clothing may be useful.

The assumption being made here that tests on dyed cotton automatically apply to all black garments may be wrong. The absorption spectrum of black nylon or silk may be different in non-visible parts of the spectrum. Ultraviolet and infra-red photography show how different things we think are a solid colour can look outside the visible range of light.

Check out Bjorn Rorslett's amazing site to see pictures of flowers in ultra-violet light against their appearance in normal light:

I thought it was a common known fact that black absorbs the full spectrum. Scientists announce it now??

By PaulCowan• 16 Oct 2009 12:07

I guess black absorbs the full range of radiation from IR to UV, so while black would reduce UV penetration it would also tend to get very hot. The first line of the story, saying it will keep you cool, is contradicted in the next sentence.
