ALL Q-TEL TELEPHONE NUMBERS TO CHANGE

desertdog
By desertdog

All Q-Tel numbers are to change as of 28th July 2010. the changes which will be annoucned soon will comprise the repetition of the first number, e.g. 3156666 will be come 3315666 and 4513456 will become 44513456. See below from Q-Tel representative:

Dear Customer
We wish to inform you that on 28th July this year all Qatar mobile and fixed line telephone numbers will increase by one digit to eight digits in total. This change will be announced by the regulatory authority, ictQATAR, via the media on 28th March but we wanted to take this opportunity to inform you as soon as we had confirmation. The new numbering system is a direct result of the enormous population and business growth that Qatar has experienced in recent years and by undertaking this exercise now it will ensure there is a large volume of numbers available for use in the future. The change will mean that the first digit of every number will be repeated, so numbers that currently begin with 3, for example, will now start with 33, and those starting with 5 will be 55. This change will apply to all telephone numbers beginning with 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. For example: 3152145 becomes 33152145 4829382 becomes 44829382 5319734 becomes 55319734 6226881 becomes 66226881 7251849 becomes 77251849

Emergency numbers within Qatar, such as 999, will remain the same. Similarly, numbers used for SMS, toll free and paging services, and numbers owned by the Ministry of Interior will also remain the same. These begin with 1, 2, 8 and 9. We will be working with all of our customers to ensure that there is no disruption to your day-to-day business, and your own customers and suppliers, on the 28th July. In the lead-up to this changeover we would recommend that you review your current communications materials and telecom equipment including testing all such equipment to ensure it is able to be re-programmed with an additional digit. Similarly, your corporate stationery and marketing materials that carry your telephone number(s) should also be updated. Please be advised that once the changeover takes place on the 28th July callers, within Qatar and overseas, will hear an automated message asking them to dial the correct number. This message will remain in place for at least three months, after this period the call will be rejected. The country code for Qatar will remain as +974. We will provide you with as much assistance as possible during this transition period and would encourage you to speak to your key account manager to ensure that all necessary changes are undertaken for your business needs. Customers who have maintenance contracts with Q-Tel for their telephone distribution equipments (PABX, IP Systems, and Key Systems), Q-Tel technical team will take care for any changes/reprogramming required. Customers who do not have maintenance contracts with Q-Tel for their telephone distribution equipments (PABX, IP Systems, and Key Systems), have to approach their vendors/installers to take care of their working system. We thank you for your cooperation during this time and please do not hesitate to contact your key account manager for further information or queries.
Sincerely
Khalid Al-Mansouri
Executive Director, Qtel Business Solutions

and here also some more details

Regards!!

PS: just as a foot note: it is said that Qtel and Voda are working with their customers to facilitate the tarnsition; however (not surprised at all!!) no email or sms notification has been sent to me "as a customer" to be aware of this upcoming change. Definitely we need a real "customer service oriented business"

try to think of the fact that u will have to re-edit all the numbers in ur phonebook/contact list!!

of course i'm sceptical!

besides, 7 digit can handle virtually 10 million cell phone numbers. more than enough for a less than 2 millions in qatar.

Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. 14% of people know that.

By desertdog• 28 Mar 2010 14:29

wow there are some sceptical people on QL!

By bleu• 28 Mar 2010 13:15

qatarisun, this applies to both Q-Tel and vodafone.. vodafone complicates this by allowing the subscriber to pick a number to add after the first 7. (It would have been much easier for everybody to just added a 7)

"7251849 becomes 77251849" are NOT Q-Tel numbers! 7 is the first digit for VODAFONE, for your information!

I would say this is most likely just another one of those prank forwards going around. I'll believe it when it's announced in the newspapers.

EDIT- Nevermind I've seen a reliable source post it now. sigh... My mobile number will become ugly but my landline number will become quite fancy.

By anonymous• 28 Mar 2010 12:03

Wow, that would make my first digits 666. Serendipity or what eh? This post also makes my profile points 666. Does thisnow mean I am the beast?

ravnos... wht do you mean by "Qtels page is blank"? and Q-Tel not knowing what's happening...

They have notified their major customers by the message above, and everybody knows their new numbers.

Vodafone's page also doesn't include anything about it...
