All this new traffic “law” is just a farce! Comedy! Nonsense!!

By qatarisun

WHY??? My friend approached the traffic light and quietly stopped behind the last car... Suddenly he sees a policeman, who is knocking on his window. Being absolutely confident, he low down the window, and policeman says: “traffic violation!” “WHY?? FOR WHAT??” my friend got surprised.. the answer was: “for.... not keeping a distance of 2 metres from the car in front of you..”!!!
...isn’t that a jok??? Does he need to keep a ruler with him to measure a distance?? And how is that possible to keep certain distance in this hell traffic, where all you do is just break and gas, break and gas... And who the hell in Qatar keeps this distance at all? You will keep a distance of 1 metre, a whole track will find a way to jump in front of you!
...so my friend said: ok, give me a ticket.. and he got one....
YOU KNOW HOW MUCH A FARE FOR IT??? Please guess!!!

By qatarisun• 7 Oct 2007 00:05
qatarisun

what do you mean "I am entitled to make mistakes, but the point is how do I behave after making a mistake"?.. the guy was standing in front of the red light, when policeman approached him and gave him a ticket QR 3000. BTW, the guy paid it off already (hamdulillah!). So what "behaviour after making mistake" r u talking about, please?

now, Maria, I never said that "entitles everybody to break law"... I am even not sure what exactly you ask here. What I mean is: those who really breaks the law and put other's lives in danger (like speeding, like cutting off, like making left turn from the right lane, etc), those may easily get away and avoid the penalty, depends on who they are and "who they know"...And someone, who didn't put anybody's life in danger, and even was not aware that he is "breaking the law" by not keeping 2 meter distance, he got to pay QR 3000!

And again, my idea in general is: we all have to follow rules and obey the law. But if one makes mistake, especially not in purpose, he shouldn't be punished that much. For each misbehaviour must be reasonable punishment. This is my idea.

The fines for breaking traffic law are ridiculous, this is the fact.

Qatarisun, yes this world is not perfect. That is when rules and punishment come into picture. As a human I am entitled to make mistakes, but the point is how do I behave after making a mistake.

(Gold words, Maria: "Everybody should abide by rules including traffic police."... but tell me frankly, does it work this way in qatar??) May be it does'nt work this way in Qatar. So.......... ??? Are you saying, that entitles everybody to break law ??? I apologise in advance if I am getting it all wrong. Please let me know what you are conveying here.

it's either too loose or too tight...The fines should be reasonable, not being created out of someone's sick mind.

Of course Maria, everyone must follow the rules, and obey the rules, and be good drivers, and not to violate the law.I only can dream about this perfect world.... but since it happened (and btw, it might happen to each of us!), the penalty must be appropriative. You cannot sentence to a death penalty someone who for instance has stolen one's umbrella ...Punishment should be reasonable.. the same with not keeping 2 metres distance.. is that a really huge crime that some people have to give their entire monthly salary for it??? It just doesn’t make any sense...

And another thing...Gold words, Maria: "Everybody should abide by rules including traffic police."... but tell me frankly, does it work this way in qatar??

Traffic laws are for the commuter's safety and smooth running of traffic. Violating it has certain fines. How can there be a relaxed/strict/middle ground for it. Everybody should abide by rules including traffic police.

By Cornellian• 6 Oct 2007 12:44

That's really insane! It's either too relaxed or too strict with the law, no middle ground, eh ?

Qatarisun, I am not justifying that the fine was appropriate, neither am I denying it. IMHO, traffic police is the authority on road. Sometimes, it is about attitude change in a driver, especially when he takes rules lightly or challenges the authority.

First the ****** rents and now these ************ fines. What the **** is wrong with the Government. Nothing makes sense these days. First the Government started mass demolition campaigns and now it has started a massive fine campaign. Better start some serious planning for future. The conditions here are becoming too hostile.

By qatarisun• 6 Oct 2007 00:45

Fines must be high enough for those who put other people in danger like those who jumps out of nowhere and cut you off; those who comes from the side road and doesn’t want to wait but squeeze somehow in front of your car; those who makes a left turn from the right lane, cutting off the car forwarding straight (it is unbelievable how many times i have seen it!!),those who jumps on the red signal... but even in these cases fines should be reasonable, real ones, not like somebody’s sick fantasy out of hell...How it is possible to pay a penalty of QR 50,000??? Or even QR 10,000?? And I am really wondering what if the person doesn’t have it? He will have to stay in Qatar to the rest of his life paying off this fine?? What an absurd!!

My 'pathan' car instructor told me this, sometime back in Dubai. One should be able to visually judge and maintain around 2 meter distance between the edge of one's car bonnet and the back wheel of the front car when one stops. The reason, if the front car breaksdown you should be able to maneuver your car and not hold the traffic behind.

I looked on the MOI page ........... list of offences, couldn't find this one re 2m, except something about leaving a gap, but I think it meant while moving, and that fine was only QR300.

Why should it therefore be 10 times more for being stationary?

Anyway, on the subject of vehicles, does anybody know if there is a grace period for the expiry of the vehicle licence? Mine is due 2 days ago. I went to industrial area tonight, 20mins b4 opening time, the queue circles the building (outside walls) and around to the main road, in both directions. People were squabbling over others pushing in, so I went to Lulu, But Lulu test station not open. I hope I can wait until after Ramadan .... 1 months grace maybe, fingers crossed!!!!

that it does not apply for everyone in Qatar! They target certain type or people! Just yesterday I personally violated traffic law ( without putting anybody in danger of course!!), and policeman stopped me.. it was dark, and he couldn't see who is inside of the car.. as soon as he saw a blond female, he tried to say in english something like "don't do it anymore" (or it was my imagination, as the guy couldn't put together two english words), and he let me go...

I am sure the same way the "law" works for the local...

others - welcome to pay ten times as much...

in general , all these “fares” are absolutely ridiculous, and don’t make any sense.. somebody with totally sick imagination could come up with this sick fares.. 3000...10,000...50,000.1 month jail, 3 months jail.... and what if i don’t have 10,000? I won’t be surprised, if in this case they give me a death penalty ..

one big joke!!! I did not know of this '2m law' I guess I should take time out and read the new Traffic dept. 'book' of new laws!!!!!! However, I venture a guess at a QR300 fine?

Anyway, I travel 100km plus every day, and so far I have not noticed any difference in the way people are driving!!! The same drivers (we all know who they are:-) continue to drive with impunity, one even came right up behind me, beeped and flashed as we passed a speed camera on airport road ............... I was doing already the limit!!!!

And as you say, leave any kind of gap in traffic jams, queing etc., between you and the car in front and somebodies front end is winkling it's way in!!!!! So now where do you stand on the '2m law'? you left a gap, somebody squeezes in, now the police man taps on your window and fines YOU!!!
