Buy her something terrible for the suprise ! maybe something that you would appreciate more than her ! Then when she freaks out give her the ring....
As for cost I bought a 1 carat diamond solitare ring in white gold. It cost a lot, but nothing like in the UK.
im gonna buy her an ENGAGEMENT RING :-D thats for sure ... and thats good to know that gold here in Qatar is cheaper than Lebanon... i already checked the prices :

The usual perfumes, gold etc are always good standbys but why not get her something a bit more personal?
I've just bought a gold pendant for my wife but I had it handmade to my design knowing what she likes. It's more personal and you still get the advantage of the choice at the souks. You can also decide on your budget and still get something nice.
