Adoption from QAWS...

Evening all,

Subject to my accommodation's written approval that I can have a pet in my apartment, can someone please tell me the procedure with adopting a pet from QAWS? Do they vet the person adopting the pet? (Pun wasn't intended but good effect).

I had a cat in the UK, which I loved dearly and I do miss having the little fella, so I wouldn't mind actually having another cat here. Naturally he / she would be in the apartment all the time as there is no way I would be able to let it out. Do you think they take this into consideration when allowing for adoptions.

I know I could contact QAWS direct, but I still don't have my approval and do not want to distract them from their valuable work.

Please can someone let me know... Thanks!!

No matter what you name your cat they will always respond to "kitty, kitty!"

you can contact Poppy to find out the procedure for adoption of animals from QAWS.

As far as vetting the adopting person...no, you are NOT required to have YOUR rabies and distemper shots nor are you required to be spayed or neutered at time of adoption..however, the animal WILL be!!!

Best of luck and contact Poppy on here or go to the website to get the phone number or map to find the location. www.QAWS.org

The best place to get everything would be Qatar Veterinary Centre but they're in the middle of moving so all of their stuff is split between different locations!!

You can get all the basics in the supermarkets but I would suggest you get the baskets, scratch poles and bits and pieces from QVC when they reopen on Saturday 10th.

Directions to the new clinic can be found on the pets and animals group page

Hope this helps!!

(And our cats have various names from Tiny to Timmy!! All of them could have their names changed though as they dont really pay attention to the ones we've given them!)

Can hardly call him / her a family member. There's just me. However, it was a female colleague who pushed me. So you can say he / she will have a family.

Anyway, any good ones with decent sounding names? My old cat was called Alfie - who was a "boring" tabby, so anything like that - Bobby, Billy, you know anything like that?

Plus where can I buy things like I asked, blankets, bowls, litter trays etc.

This will be my son / daughter, just like Alfie was, so they need the best... ;-)

Brilliant we'll see you on Friday!!

The website (dogs) was updated on January 4th but the majority of our cats are rehomed really quickly and tend to be gone before they go on the website!! Now the cats section is more to promote the long term residents who need a bit of advertising!

We've got some real lovelies in at the moment so I'm sure we'll find you a new family member!!

I have now got the confirmation I needed from my Employer about having pets in my accommodation.

Being an accommodation arranged through my company, I have been given special dispensation to keep a pet so long as I pay for any remedial work for any damages my son / daughter my do.

I will be there on Friday evening with cat box and all. Please tell me what delightful cats are available if you can because the QAWS site hasn't been updated since November.

Also, I need to know where to get a cat box, bowls, mats, blankets etc. Can you advise? I phoned Animal Kingdom and they couldn't understand why I need directions to find their shop? Bizarre!

Thanks for all your help.

None of the cats are declawed at QAWS as personally we find it an act of cruelty. Scratching furniture goes with the territory as you probably know but if you do have a kitty with a habit it can generally be trained out of them!

We do have a chat with any potential adopters but seeing as you have had a cat before and are getting permission from your landlord I don't see why we wouldn't be able to find a furry to suit you and your lifestyle! There is a little it of paperwork to fill out and we ask for an adoption fee to help cover some of our costs.

We don't insist that cats stay indoors - some cats hate being kept in 24/7 but we would help you choose a cat that is more then happy to sit on the sofa all day and curl up on the bed at night!

Please do come down to the shelter to visit our residents as soon as you get the OK from your accomodation (And if they say no - I know of some apartments that do allow pets!!).

Just remember to bring a cat box with you when you visit as there is a high possibility you will leave with one (or two...).

Yes, my American cat (Osama) came from the shelter declawed and it was rather a relief. My QAWS kitty in Doha (Amira) has all of her accoutrements and she's a bit of a terror on the fabric. Sorry, Vegas, forgot I hijacked a thread about cats!

I agree with Vegas about the Cats damaging the furniture .plus their fur can be a problem for people with allergies..

Good morning, notfromhere! I'm home watching the Sugar Bowl right now but hubby has to go back to DOH tomorrow. I come back 20JAN. When do you come back to the US!?

I spent several years as an international flight attendant for AA. Let's just say that the only topic of conversation among air crew is how tired we were and other fascinating aspects of sleep/insomnia. Never did figure out how anyone had all those affairs people think crews have - everyone I knew would NEVER have sacrificed sleep for mere sex.

Good morning Scarlett, Mandi, Novi.....

Me and my big mouth. I slept for 2.5 hours. Been awake since 2:30, decided at 4:00 to get up and read. Trouble is, it's a really good book! I should have picked something borrring.

As for taking sleeping drugs, I usually don't.

I can't take that over the counter stuff like Tylenol PM etc. It makes me groggy all the next day. I've tried Benadryl occasionally, but I don't have any. Will have to rifle through hubby's nightstand and see if he has any.

For me it's just a matter of time. I figure I've got about 3 more nights of this misery, then I"ll be back to my usual middle-aged 3 a.m. insomnia.

Lol, and I have to go back to the States in about 3 weeks! How do people who have to travel all the time DO this???

Have a great day, everyone :-)

Ambien makes a LOT of people hallucinate but they are still walking around!! It did my aunt that way and she didn't remember ANYTHING!!!

I like using Benedryl because it does the same to me...withthe added bonus of no stopped up sinuses or itchiness!!

Killjoy, bless you for wanting to share your life with a QAWS kitten. Our little feline foundling has made our house in Doha a home.

Scarlett and NFH, benedryl is for me the equivalent of a two-by-four to the cranium but I wake up with a hangover! Ambien does nothing for me but puts my husband out like a light. Go figure.

I will be most glad to whack you over the head with a heavy object so you can rest...or I could lend you my Benedryl...that's what finally worked last night!
