Act of sheer stupidity kills boy!

A BOY of eight died after shooting himself in the head with an Uzi sub-machine gun.

Christopher Bizilj was aiming at a pumpkin at a gun fair when the weapon’s recoil forced it to jerk upwards — sending a bullet into his skull.

His distraught dad Charles admitted last night: “I gave permission for him to fire.”

He went on: “I watched several other children and adults use the Uzi. It’s a small weapon, and Christopher was comfortable with guns. There were larger machine guns with more recoil, and we avoided those.”

Christopher died in hospital. His dad, a hospital medical director, said his son had previous experience firing handguns, but had never fired an automatic weapon before.

Dr Bizilj added: “Christopher will be sorely, sorely missed. My son was very cautious, very well trained, and very much enjoyed firing.”

He said the family were coming to terms with Sunday’s incident in Westfield, Massachusetts, which he described as “a terrible accident”.

It is legal in America for children to fire a weapon if they have parental permission.

Although police called it a “self-inflicted accidental shooting”, officers are investigating.

Charges
But it is believed to be unlikely that any charges will follow.

britexpat said We'll get the same old excuse from the gun lobby ... ...

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people"

Brit what other excuse is there for it? The gun jumped into the kids arms and decided to shoot the boy? I also beleive guns dont kill people, people kill people.

Why would you take an 8 year old to a gun fair, did they run out of fun things to do with their kids, let alone let him use one. The father made a big mistake that unfortunately cost him his sons life and will live with that for the rest of his life. I do feel sorry for him though, losing a child is bad enough, but he also has to live with the fact that he contributed to his death.

I am sorry for the loss.. It must have been a truamatic experience.

It also should act as a lesson for us all..

Adults need to be more responsible when storing / handling firearms - especially where children are involved..

A freaking UZI!

I did fired once, one of those mothers and they do have a recoil from hell.

My nephews best friend, 14 years old at that time, blew his head off in 2000, while playing with a Police Service revolver belonging to his father

According to the police investigation, it was consider an accident.

His father was found innocent of all charges.

Why?

He had the gun store in a gun cabinet with a lock, which was broken off and the trigger lock of the pistol was being pick by the kid and force to displace outwards while using a chisel and a saw.

In the action of picking the lock of the revolver, the trigger had enough space to be push back, causing the hammer to strike forward while in the process of removing the lock.

Weird stuff that kids do for fun and curiosity.

The fathers kids still a police officer and his wife just had twins recently.

Perhaps their needs to be "minimum age limit" for handling guns - say around 14 years.
