thanks for your comment on this issue B.E

and now on the forum where people could post freely, they still backing up on this issue. i though some of the people from that region here on ql, could maybe give me a better picture of whats happening, but seems that no body is willy to talk about such issues, only to keep the dignity

of their home.i still dont understand why most people here always take things very personal when ever their country is mentioned.

The reason no one talks about it is that they are afraid to bring "shame" on their families or antagonize the culprits into comiting more such crimes..

The only answer is for the government to take action against these criminals and send a clear message that this will not be tolerated..

hi britexpat , thats exactly what my point was,the abusive act carry on by those men. this doest mean that if you are indian man you belong to those kind of abusive men. its not the issue of culture. the fact and the matter here is young and beautiful women are getting physically abuse and no body talk about it.

There are two aspects at play here.. One is cultural regarding the dowry.. Nothing wrong, if both parties agree to this..

The other is the treatment of women and the use of "abuse / power" by men to control women and enrich themselves.. This is something that needs to be addressed and outlawed.. The only answer is stiff sentences for culprits..

its dowry 1t of all not diary and in India its usually paid in Gujarat,Kerala,Karnataka,Bihar etc which is actually haram in Islam and illegal and should not be practised. In south India gold is especially paid in kilos including land, property, car, money and somtimes even flat. This practice should be banned all over India so that the innocent girls are not killed by der greedy in laws.

Some people just don't know how to smile everyday.

Just give them a sports mouthpiece as a gift and a instructional manual with steps of smiling. maybe next year they will learn how to smile.

At least those lips will look adorable and inflatable and very radiant with a fake smile.

this is not a common phenomena in the sub continent. But this does occur. It is not related to dowry anyway. Its due to sour grapes.

are the men in india so weak, and lazy that women have to even pay DOWRY for them? why are you concentrating on the lil tiny mistake instead of talking about the fact! dont ignore the fact that these men who doing such things are not men, or not even good enough to be human. the media all the time talk about how muslim women are mistreated by their husbands and women in the arab world do not have rights and bla bla bla! iam only wondering what people have to say about such crazy stuff that hapen in india!

hey listen, iam not about to start any war between indian culture iam only asking what other people think or have to say about such crazy act!

Weasel, fefee is not from Afghanistan and merely stating an opinion and bringing this issue to public attention.

Only when there is public attention and pressures brought to bear, that change might take place. Call it "extra legal" pressures to foster change, if you will. Note: I didn't say "illegal". That's 2 different things.

Although there are strict penalties in respect of dowry offences in India, as you informed us, but enforcement is a problem, isn't it? I guess with the massive population, enforcement is a huge challenge. Having said that, the problems are understandable but not condoned.

Fefee - Why don't you try asking those who commit such heinous crimes directly instead of generalising? Stop trying to stir sh1t. I see you're profile says you're from Afghanistan. How would you like to start by explaining the shocking acts (state sponsored) perpetrated by Taliban against women? I'm not trying to start a flame war here, so don't bother replying coz I won't.

BTW Dowry offences in India attract very strict penalties - http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2007/dec/13/india.randeepramesh1

"women in indian culture pay dairy to their husband".

They never pay dairy (too short of cows)they pay dowry.

in my opinion, its very wrong, the fact here is not about the dowry, but wasting acid on the girls if they didt have enough to pay, or refuse to marry.
