About Asian Games

It was said that almost 10,000 players will participate in Asiad and ofcourse thousand and thousands of guests and people will visit Doha on december 2006. So how is Doha going to be at that time?? Crowded !!

Now, are you going to stay here chaps?or will you leave and runaway from the traffic till the end of the games?

As for me, I'm not sure weather I stay or leave .. it depends.

What about you chaps? Wink

as for me, im excited for the asian games. although i'm not really into sports but an event like this is something to look forward for. a diversion from our daily routine. i'm just amazed that this country has less holidays.

by the way, do we still have work on these days? are we given a day off to watch any of the games?

I agree with Dohagirl. Qataris (and Asian expats living in Qatar) should take pride in this event and support it by going to the Opening and Closing ceremonies and watching a sport event. This is a preview of what Qatar can do and hopefully the Summer Olympics can be staged here in the very near future.

The Americans can stay home. How many times do I have to give out the target audience for the Asian Games? Why would the Asian Games care if Westerners are watching the Games? They are ASIAN GAMES. They only care if ESPN airs a few of the major events. They want all of the expat Asians to attend. Also, I think you would be surprised how many Qatari's will go. The Qatari population is a small one and this is prestigious for them.

Also, I highly doubt there will be a terrorist attack, that's just typical American paranoia. Terrorists are interested in targeting Westerners, there won't be many Westerners at the Games.

While all you people are happy and most of you thinking of going to the opening, think of all the security trouble you might get in there, i heared qatar's trying its best and training hundreds of their police and others and stuff.... , ever thought of what the terrorist organizations are thinking of and planning? :D it's not hard to make a bomb and go to the opening, let's say there are 2, 1 pushes the trigger u see all the people running to the other side then suddenly you see someone pushing another trigger and that place blowing up, it wouldn't be funny... so don't think it's just gonna be fun and yay watching the asian games because it's in here, i believe lots of the americans will prefer staying at home and watching it on their TV, since all these companies are sending all these emails and letters to the americans... let's just wait and see what happens... i'm afraid there'll be alot of problems since lots of qataris are not interested in sports.. then there's a big chance of most the people being there europians, big risk.. think about it..

I am starting work in Doha in September and are desperate to see the opening of the Asian Games. I think it is a great opportunity for anyone (even if they don't enjoy playing or watching sport) to go along and support sports people from all over Asia!

I've got the dates jotted down in my calendar and I'm counting down the days to support this great event!

It's like to me that you know very well Doha :)

so I need your help :)

I will shortly move to Doha (arround September ) and I'm looking for an apartment or villa on Doha with 3 bedrooms furnished or not furnished.

Can you provide me the name or the web sites of the Apartments & Real Estate companies?

My email: [email protected]

Thanks

Once again though, nobody at DAGOC cares if there is even one person in the seats as long as ESPN is broadcasting.

I personally think, DAGOC or Qatar should rent out a dozen shios, go to some country in Asia, get like tens if not hunderds of Asians, offer them 1000 riyals clear for 1 month, transport them to Qatar, and then once here have buses ready to take them from one event to another. And make sure they are always really excited.....

Then, the games might have a chance of getting filled. LOOOOOOL

By the way, maybe it does happen but I dont think there will be many families to support their sons/ daughters, firstly many will not have the money and alsoc'mon only a few will have a chance to do well .... and what is this kindergarden ... going with your children to see them run etc...

N.B. I'm sure the Opening and Closing cerenomies will be great and surely hope they'll be packed, but they are not really about sport, once that flamboyance has ended, the real test will begin.

Are they really 500QR minimum? -- if so they will be packed with Qataris for sure, and quite a few westerners but very few of other nationalies I would think.

I am not working for the Asian Games but one of my clients is working with the Asian Games.

Tickets, I believe are 10QR a game, they want all the labourers to go. I believe they will too. Qatari's will make it out, the only people who won't go are Western expats, which make up a small minority of the population.

Granted I don't beleive that chess, bowling and pool will be well attended but hey, what can you expect.

And once again let me say the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be well worth any price.

There are 26,000 volunteers from Qatar alone, they and their families are going to take a couple of seats. There are 1,500 athletes from China alone, so they and their families and entourage. That doesn't include the athletes from other populace countries like India, Korea, and Japan.

These are the largest games in the world next to the Summer Olympics, and media interest has already guranteed that it will be more watched than the last Commonwealth Games, on TV anyway.

And once again, DAGOC doesn't care how many people actually sit in the seats at the stadium, all they care about is Media coverage.

Oh, and insider tip, 500QR will be worth it to watch the Opening Ceremonies, and the Closing Ceremonies will be just as good.

Im going to be renting my spare room out over the asian games. I was hoping to entice a female gymnast to take it but, with my luck, ill probably end up with a female weightlifter with a moustache.

Come on dohagirl, how often do the Qatar FA have to entice people to attend football matches by offering free raffles with cars as prizes. This avoided having a "spot the crowd" competition. The only game that I recall pulling in a full housewas the final of the Asian Cup in the 80's.

I would love to see the Asian Games well attended but it just isn't going to happen.

Many of the hotel beds are already accounted for by officials (and friends) of the governing body the OCA (Olympic Council of Asia).

Friends and relatives of the athletes will have to either stay at hotels or stay with friends in Qatar. There was a proposal to put relatives of athletes with Qatari families but I don't know how far that idea got as each "host" would have to be vetted.

There will be literally thousands of media. I don't know if the media village was ever built or whether they are pursuing the idea of putting all media on ships moored in the port.

In respect of charging QR 500 for the opening ceremony? I see a repeat of the first motor cycling in Qatar where they charged QR 100 for admission and then because of the lack of take-up made it free but refused to refund the cash to those who had paid the initial price.

We are talking of multiple-venues for a period of 2 weeks not just a single event.

i would like to watch the opening and closing of the games. But opening ticket sell for QR 500 per person... it would be alot of money to spent. Best just stay at home and watch it in the tele.

Agree with Doha girl and MJ...South Korea used the Asian Games in 1986 and Olympics in 1988 to announce its arrival on the world stage..

China is doing it with the 2008 Beijing Olympics..

So its natural that Doha is trying to do it with Asian Games..

No one believed the Qataris when they launched Al-Jazeera..While I am not 100% convinced about its objectivity..Still if Bush is plotting to Bomb it..it might be really big now...and it is...

So there is no reason to believe that Asian Games can't be held successfully..

The families and entourage of the athletes will make up a big portion of the audience. But for this Asian games they don't really care how many people are in the audience, what they care about is how many people are watching it on TV. I beleive that will be a lot. This games isn't about making money it's about raising the profile of Qatar and the Middle East.

i have to say i completely believe that it will be the worst attended games in history, not only because of qataris and to some extent expatriates interest in watching sporting events. Indeed, most other asian games have occurred where there is a huge pool of people able to watch them. Pusan 2002; 62 million South Korea - with people from East Asia China/Japan/ PHILIPPINES relatively easily coming in. Thailand 1998 (60 million and again Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia etc.

Now, Qatar is surrounded by Saudi who although will be probably the biggest still do not like Qatar and many may not come to spite Qatar (i feel not certain tho, if the people and govt have the same opinion. And all other countries realistically only being able to fly. And between 1-15 Dec, Ramadan has just ended, Eid will be coming soon, nobody will want to come to Qatar to watch someone just play some peculiar sport and take time off work!!(outside of Qatar)

Indeed, if Qatar cannot fill even close to fill of a stadium of 20/30k to watch one of the best football teams (Argentina) for free FOR A ONE OFF, i cannot see how it can SELL millions of tickets for someone to watch Pakistan v Singapore play eachother in football for instance.

I hope I am wrong but i fear i will not be so.

If everyone leaves Doha, who is going to watch the games. Certainly not visitors. Where are they going to stay.

These could be one of (if not the worst) attended games in history.
