5 women buried alive in Pak, MP defends act

ISLAMABAD: A Pakistani lawmaker defended a decision by southwestern tribesmen to bury five women alive because they wanted to choose their own husbands, telling stunned members of parliament this week to spare him their outrage.

"These are centuries-old traditions and I will continue to defend them," Israr Ullah Zehri, who represents Baluchistan province, said on Saturday. "Only those who indulge in immoral acts should be afraid."

The women, three of them teenagers, were shot and then thrown into a ditch. They were still breathing as their bodies were covered with rocks and mud, according to reports, which said their only 'crime' was that they wished to marry men of their choosing.

There have been cases of women stripped and marched naked through village for allegedly having an adulterous affair.. There have been cases of "gang raping" a woman for allegedly having an affair. There have been cases of Acid being thrown on women by husbands..

In ALL these cases, NOTHING was done..Can you blame me for being cynical...

Pakistan women's deaths condemned

Pakistan's Senate has called for action to be taken against men alleged to have buried alive five women in the western province of Balochistan in July.

Reports from the district of Nasirabad said the women were killed because three of them wanted to get married without the approval of their families.

Last week two senators caused uproar by suggesting that the killings were a matter of tribal tradition.

Women's rights groups have expressed outrage over the incident.

According to reports from Balochistan, three women between 18-20 years of age from the Imrani tribe were abducted by tribesmen who had heard about their plans to marry without family consent.

Two older women who tried to help the would-be brides were also kidnapped.

The reports say the women were all shot, thrown into a ditch and then buried, even though they were still alive.

On Friday a female senator raised the case in the national parliament in Islamabad.

She was criticised by two male senators, who said she should have gone to Balochistan first to examine people's lives their before raising the killings in the Senate.

Now the Senate has passed a formal resolution on the deaths.

"This house condemns the brutal murder of five women in Balochistan's Nasirabad district and calls for strong action to be taken against the culprits," the statement said.

It called on the Senate's human rights committee "to produce a comprehensive report on the incident in one month".

Tribal areas in Pakistan are most backward areas, people there are still living centureis old atmosphere, they dont beleive too much in education, and i think may be the one reason is, they dont have enough resources of earning... there full efforts are just to earn something for the day... Govt of Pakistan is also not putting much efforts to provide educational and other facilities there... so IGNORANCE becomes very much significant factor there... and then something bad happened there...

As society matures, they are able to differentiate between good and bad traditions. The main ingredient here is education. As education becomes available to all, people begin to think for themselves and their horizons broaden.

That is a very scary thought. What is it with tradition? Okay, so I am American and we don't have many long traditions. But it used to be "traditional" for centuries to burn women as witches in Europe and in the early American colonies. It used to be "tradition" to send unmarried mothers to convents or mental institutions. Why do we value tradition so much when so many of them or bestial at best and downright murder at worst?

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

how easy u can brain-wash some ppl and make them believe this is not only right, but it is a tradition, God's will and so on...this is crazy.

The irony is. Such ignorance is existing in a country that is cosidered on the world map of nuclear technology

I can't believe this is the same Pakistan where I come from.. Seems like another planet or something.. I have always told my parents that I would chose the man I marry and I would not go for an arranged marriage. My family has always respected my wishes and never forced me into anything. Not just me, all the girls in my family have been to school and college and all are working. Most of them have found partners of their own choice and are happy.. I find it so difficult to relate to that Pakistan where girls are still murdered in the name of honor killing.. What a shame

why they did not bury the whole clan's women? :(

Would people ever learn? Would they stop? Old traditions and to the end of this crap, let it go to hell ...

This moron should be taken and himself buried alive. He claims that it is "tribal custom".

This is a heinous crime and anyone who condones it is not fit to be called human.
