To the 5 Good-for-Nothing Kids at Town Center
Yes, to the 5 of you, shame on you for abusing a hapless puppy!! Throwing him around just because the puppy is yours does not give you any right to hurt him or to do anything you considered fun.
I hope the fact that almost all of us in the place gave you that look- as if all wanted to strangulate your useless necks- gave you pause as to what you are doing. And yes, you did feel embarass, did you not? For you stopped what you were doing. What did your parents, schools and society taught you by the way? Did they teach you to be brutal to animals and other creatures? Or did they teach you to be gentle and to be caring to anyone, especially to the innocent ones..grrrr...
** Can we call 999 if we see animals being abused? Whom to call? Just wondering. I was so distressed by what I saw this afternoon that I wanted to curl up and have a good cry. Why do some people so mean to animals?
This has nothing to do with culture. These people you see are just the bad apples of the tree. Not all of us are like this, the good ones read the Qu'ran and abide by it.
we don't do this for the glory, but because there is a need in Doha. All of Tallg's responses are correct and most people who know about us, know that we are not a government funded operation, but payout nearly QR30 000 a month that it costs to keep the shelter running, from donations we receive from other animal lovers.
UK, sorry to hear about the ringworm epidemic you are having in the family, yes, its true, sometime we do have problems like this that enter the shelter, but with animals coming in from all over, we don't have the luxury of screening them for health issues until they arrive with us, and by then, they have captured our hearts and we take them in regardless.... We do treat the animals once they are with us too, as our HUGE vetbill will confirm.
People seem to think we do this full time and we have a full compliment of staff running around picking up animals and servicing the public. This is QAWS in Qatar, not the RSPCA in England, or SPCA in South Africa. We are three women, with full-time jobs and families to take care of, so no, we do this in the spare time we have and because we love the animals, and their safety is paramount. If you call us, we will assist you as far as we can, but you have to go the extra mile too...

QAWS do a wonder job.. with all the resources at their disposable they still can't manage 100%.
We took a kitten from QAWS, but our luck that she is turning into a real hard work. The whole family got ringworm rash. plus the kitten her self has rash and loosing hair. Weekly vists to Vets to make sure she is OK plus costing a lot of money.
If we are having just one kitten and so much problem imagine how many animals QAWS is taking care of.
Good work QAWS keep the good work up.

chelsea, i would really like to adopt a dog if only it is allowed in my accommodation. but it is not. i'll visit QAWS on my day-offs to help out.

normanila - you are a twat.
What do you think QAWS is? A well financed operation, with all the resources they require and a huge team of staff sat there ready an waiting to jump into action as soon as they get a call?
It's not. It's a voluntary organisation run by people who give up what little spare time they have to try and help animals in Qatar. The government refuses to give them charity status so they cannot accept donations from companies who wish to help them. They rely solely on the kindness of other animal lovers in Qatar.
Perhaps you should consider offering them your help or a small donation, rather than slandering them without actually understanding what they do or how they work.
As you appear to be a concerned animal lover I hope you took the stray cats near your former accommodation to the government vets and got them neutered (for free).
my parents naturally instilled in me to care for everyone including the animals. i hate seeing dogs in chains or in cages. in fact, i hate zoos because it saddens me to see lions/tigers/elephants/birds so bored and confined to their cages/chains.

sigh, vb and lovinni, some kids living near town center are really from outer space. they are oblivious to good manners, authority and even gender. if you admonished them for something, there's a good chance that they will get back at you even if you are female.

actually, i was at second floor but could see the kids through the glass window.I heard the "cry" of a dog but could not see clearly. I went downstairs to investigate but the kids (teenagers actually) have gone outside the town center (there is a glass door). A friend told me that he wanted to ask one of the guys to give him the puppy instead. By this time, they stopped what they were doing, I guess because everyone was just so plain angry on the kids.

I think you are doing a wonderful job! I'm sure if you could you would be willing to take all animals from the streets, because you really care for them. I really hope you will be able to became a charity.
It's true that had working hadn't killed anyone yet, but why to take risk?
Normanila - what did you want us to do? Did you know that we have full-time jobs, husbands, kids...
What did you do about the stray cats near your dumpster? Did you take them in, vaccinate them, neuter them, care for them and find them new homes? Or did you move house and leave them?
Have you ever been to the QAWS shelter? Looked at all the faces staring at you from behind wire doors? Looked at the kittens living in dog crates because we don't have any spare cages?
Have you met the dogs living in the office? The kitchen? Metal pens in the middle of the cat cabin?
There is no way we can take in every animal in Qatar. If anyone thinks they can run the shelter better then us - please by all means tell us how. We are desperate for an answer as to how we can help more. But taking in wild street cats is not an option. We don't have the time or the facilities to take in animals we can't rehome.
To date we have 52 dogs & puppies and 44 cats & kittens at the shelter with over 30 waiting to come in. Plus the donkey, bull, possum, kestrel, rabbit, ducks, chickens, guinea fowl, geese....
Can anyone foster anything?

lols...probably those kids were also shouted at, slapped, and kicked while growing up so they could not show compassion to others. sigh...

kids be the raw meat! :) And not only one, but all the hungry dogs of Doha.
It's true that had working hadn't killed anyone yet, but why to take risk?
Need to get a big dog, and put the little kids on a leash with raw meat strapped to their boddies.
:D
don't employ with their kids or educate them at all. They don't care about them at all, they are thrown out to the street and do whatever they want. And if they do harm even to people, the parents don't care. Why would they care what their children are doing to animals, when they don't like animals as well. Sad, but true.
It's true that had working hadn't killed anyone yet, but why to take risk?
For me, i would love to send a rabid dog at them to teach them a lesson, hehe
Lovinni- Dont bother to call Qaws, they might probably tell you to rescue the animal yourself after of course giving you litany of reason why they could not come at that moment. It happened to me once. I PM one of them re stray cats in the dumpster near my former accomodation(that was two years ago) because they appear to be soooo concerned about rescuing stray animals around Doha. I ended up given a rescue them yourself attitude.
"Masunod nawa ang iyong kalooban!"
It's all well and good complaining about the little brats that spit onto the ice rink and pull faces out of car windows, but in this case there was a life involved. OK so it may only have been a puppy, but it is still a life. What will they have done when they got bored of it? They won't have found it a nice new home....
If anyone sees something like this PLEASE get involved. Go down and talk to them, shout at them, ask them to give you the dog. Anything to let them know what they are doing is unacceptable. We are always full at the shelter but in a situation like this we will find space for it - even if it's a temporary holding area until a kennel is free.
If you don't want to get involved yourself - call us at QAWS. I will quite happily tell them exactly what I think of them down the phone :D and come and collect the pup.
Sorry if I sound harsh but I get calls all the time from people telling me about incidents that happened a couple of days ago - how am I supposed to help? Who knows what happens to the animals. Hopefully they will have got bored and thrown it on the street - at least then it has a chance of getting to us!!

I know of a friend, who would do anything to save a pet. He would do just anything even to save his Gold Fish from dying. Would spend hours to ease their pain. Just yesterday he was busy saving a pigeon that was stuck under his home A/C. After a great struggle he was able to shift the nest to safer place and moved the eggs. Now the pigeons are happy. He even does a lot of stray cats as well. But its real sad that some among us don't respect animals and there is nothing much that anyone can do for animals here. I hope something comes up real soon for these poor creatures.
I often use my digital camera when I see things and then I would yell at the kids and tell them I am calling the police and showing them the pics, it might scare them into acting appropriately. Usually being yelled at by an adult will do the trick. Its sad to hear an animal being abused. In America they take this seriously as its a step away from hurting a human.
Beating on someone or something that is not able to defend itself is cruel. Taking pleasure out of it si f*cked up. Animal cruelty is horrible.
Yes, I'm not saying that the cruelty is born out of their religious belief. But I'm saying their religion teaches them not to be cruel. Are they ignorant to this part of the their religion, choosing to ignore it, or just outright f^ckwits who need a taste of their own medicine?
Was sad when i went to Bahrain zoo, we came around a corner as some young girl in her hidjab was tormenting a goat and hitting it with her mobile, she scurried off but the guards didn't seem to do much. Doha zoo seemed bit better still arab youngsters and some adults tormenting animals but the guards do actually step in.
Poor puppy... As i've said before, animals + Qataris doesn't seem to work out vey well.
Surely the fact that the Quran teaches Muslims not to abuse any form of life should be enough. I thought the Quran was the be all and end all. Or do some of them just overlook that bit?
the gulf area, even the parents are not used to animals like we are in our own countries, so how can they educate their children if they have no clue themselves.
I grew up with animals like you, so much so that I prefer them over people... You will be surprised at the number of dog training clients I have that are also Muslim/Arab and they treat their animals well, they generally come from Lebanon and Egypt. I also have local clients whose minds I have changed with regards to the way they keep their pets ie, keeping an enclosed area for them, instead of chaining them up and such.
Being here I have understood how most GCC people view animals - in the quran and hadiths it talks about not abusing them, but it also talks about that dogs in particular are only to be kept for working - so you can see why they have a very hard time when it comes to keeping dogs, again, just dogs for anything other than guarding and security.
We will never change most muslim/arab perceptions that dogs have feelings too, but we can work towards teaching them that animals do feel pain, thirst, hunger...

Animal abuse should be taken seriously, as it is often an indicator that something else is going on in the home or with the individual. Many convicted serial killers have had animal abuse in their background. It all start from there...
wow, that's good news Xena. But i find it sad that these children know about how to treat the animals in their schools. I am lucky coz my parents taught me to value all creatures especially the domesticated ones. When we were kids, my parents gave us a pet dog and gently guide us on how to raised it properly. It's not only about caring, it is also about responsibility.
yes, one person, one school at a time. :-)

but as is always put out there, human rights are virtually nil in this country, what hope do animals have?
However, I will tell you that we have various schools that come down to the shelter for field trips. Yesterday i had a teacher tell me about her first day at this particular school where she found a group of kids kicking a kitten around. Now these same kids are the ones visiting us at the shelter, and with the guidance we have been giving them, she says that they are now the ones educating the rest of the school with regards to the correct way to treat animals. That is change:-) and we will get there, one person, one school, at a time.
These kids come down and have a favourite dog or cat, they cannot wait to see, and when they deal with them, you can see that now they understand. It won't be an overnight change, but we will get there.

Some kids are just horrible brats... they know that is wrong.
The kids on the compound where i live taunt the Indian man who runs the shop, vandalise cars, smash bottles against walls, throw trash everywhere, spray graffitti, rip up flowers etc etc
i dread to think what they do to their pets and the maid.
Xena, I find this really unfortunate because Qatar has the resources to protect everyone, including the four legged- ones. Why can't the government or any civil society run an ad at any local or cable tv about animal welfare (and children's rights while we are at it)? Visit schools and explain the imnportance of respecting the rights of the animals (and kids)?

except the ones about dog fighting and it doesn't help...
Do call QAWS out, we will try to help where we can, and we will certainly come and remove the animal if we are able too. Until people are educated on how to treat animals in this country, this cruelty will continue.
Calling the police is an option too, however, they will generally not respond unless the animal is vicious and needing to be removed (read - shot).

ok lets just say i call QAWS, then report the situation. how about these kids? they should be reprimanded.
for sure QAWS would save the animal first. then the kids? to the police? or their moms?

all of us were waiting for what these kids would do next. i was really afraid that they would just throw the puppy in the middle of the road to be hit by passing cars. but thay had stopped what they were doing. after a while, they left the place.

That is horrible. there are so many things I see young kids doing wrong around the place and I wish I could say something but can not.
I have seen kids spitting over the rails in city centre on people skating in the ice rink or screamintg loadly around the mall.
I hear too many stories of animals being used as toys or inanimate objects in Qatar. Kicking, dragging, shooting, driving, throwing.
i wonder PM if they listen if an Asian is telling them to stop? most of them dont listen to their parents and nannies too...
poor pup...
