46 massacred in Political Violence!

A strange story indeed.

A state of emergency was declared in the southern island of Mindanao yesterday after gunmen killed and mutilated at least 46 people in the Philippines’ worst single incident of political violence.

President Arroyo announced the emergency as police and soldiers recovered dozens of bodies from shallow graves in Maguindanao province — where they had been crudely buried on Monday. The atrocity is said to be a personal embarrassment for Ms Arroyo, who is supported by the local politician widely suspected of being behind the killings.

The victims were relatives and supporters of an opposition politician, and were travelling to register his candidature in next year’s election for the governorship of Maguindanao.

Ismael Mangudadatu, the candidate, had sent his wife, sisters and two female lawyers — in the belief that women, they would not be attacked by his enemies. All were killed, along with at least a dozen local journalists reporting on the event. Many of the women are believed to have been raped before they were murdered.

You're correct. There will be too many "self interests" and the matter will probably be forgotten sooner than later ..

These people must be culled once & for all...Maguindanao is very prosperous province but because of this political warlords, the province is not moving into prosperity. People there are living in fear at all sides...very sad reality...

These politicians that suppose to protect the constituency are the one perpetrating crimes with impunity...

You're right lobot, these must tooth for tooth so that these people must know how it feels

to live in fear and pain...

Filipino forum. It was brutal & heinous.

What caused this is perhaps an aged conflicts between clans who wants to take control of the land in Maguindanao.

I really can't imagine how the people behind these killings can still sleep & live a normal life.

All we need is to pray that all these dirty politics be stopped .

Power is a terrible drug.

I suppose the rape of the women was to add insult to injury and send a powerful message to the opposition. I hope the criminals are brought to justice, but I doubt it would happen :O(
