‘Humane’ homes for migrant workers
As part of initiatives to improve living conditions for migrant workers in Qatar, British experts are to help build a new generation of “humane” homes for more than 50,000 construction workers.
These housing compounds will include health centres, shops, recreational areas and even psychologists’ consulting rooms will be built in co-operation with the government of Qatar, according to Quantex Qatar.
These efforts come shortly after Amnesty International recently issued a report documenting the living conditions of laborers and calling it a 'crisis'.
In these new accomodations, each house will have 3 bedrooms, with a limit of four people to each room, as well as a living room, bathroom, and outdoor space.
A land space of 1m square meters has already been acquired by a joint venture between Quantex Qatar and US company Global Building Solutions.
“(The buildings are) designed with one thing in mind - to improve the lives of the migrant workers who are fundamental to the success of Qatar 2022,” Simon Trafford of Quantex Qatar told Building magazine.
An estimated additional 500,000 workers will be needed during the eight years prior to the World Cup to build infrastructure and facilities. So far Nepal and India have provided the largest number of migrant workers.
