EAA’s programme Al Fakhoora, UNDP, UNICEF and UNWRA have convened a two-day workshop  (24th -25th November 2014) in Amman, Jordan, to identify the recovery, reconstruction and psychosocial needs of the education sector in Gaza. The workshop saw the three UN agencies operating in Gaza present a detailed overview regarding the situation on the ground in Gaza and the priority areas for intervention in the short to medium term, modes of implementation of projects as well as the human resource needs. Based on the presentations and relevant findings Al Fakhoora will subsequently assess how it can provide assistance to education projects in Gaza.

This workshop is one of EAA’s proactive efforts toensure that the recently received funds from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar (MOFA) from the Qatar Development Fund are allocated efficiently and in response to immediate and identified needs.

Commenting on the two-day Amman workshop, Farooq Burney, Director of Al Fakhoora, said: “This workshop has provided an opportunity to receive a comprehensive and updated overview of the recovery, reconstruction and psychosocial needs of the education sector in Gaza. Each UN agency has provided detailed information relevant to its specific area: development, children and refugees. This is important as it allows us to take strategic action working with our partners in the areas which are most in need, and we are grateful to the recent donation received from the Qatar Development Fund which will enable us to put many projects into action”.

About the Al Fakhoora Programme

Al Fakhoora is a programme of Education Above All set up to provide young people in Gaza with access to education. Working in partnership with NGOs in Gaza, its helps to do this in a number of ways; through scholarship and empowerment programmes, reconstructing institutes of higher learning such as colleges and universities, and providing much needed psychosocial support.
