What did they think?

JAKARTA, Indonesia – The former editor-in-chief of Playboy Indonesia began a two-year prison sentence Saturday for publishing pictures of scantily clothed women, riling free speech activists in the world's most populous Muslim nation.

Erwin Arnada, 47, did not speak as he was escorted from the prosecutor's detainee car under tight security at the Cipinang prison in the capital, Jakarta.

When the now-defunct Playboy Indonesia hit newsstands in 2006, Islamic hard-liners smashed its editorial offices and started legal proceedings against its top editor.

So I am a bit confused.... When they issued the licence for Playboy, what did they think would be published? Women in jeans and polonecks?

Ok...but still...a license to operate is issued so it's legal.

Then when "other" people raised a BIG fuss about it...that is confusing and my word would be...Duuhhh?!? (*scartching my head)

a license to operate...TO PLAYBOY :)

Everyone as in EVERYONE knows what the magazine is...an adult magazine.

The guy got imprisoned for publishing a PHOTO OF

"scantily clothed women, riling free speech activists".

I guess it was okey to publish 'almost naked women' in posing glory but mixing politics is a NO-NO.

Indonesians are hell bent on becoming Saudi - Part II

http://www.thejakartapost.com/news/2010/06/11/%E2%80%98feverish%E2%80%99-minister-wants-ban-%E2%80%98negative%E2%80%99-internet-content.html

Indonesia's communications and information technology minister said sex videos allegedly featuring celebrities made him feverish, adding that the country needed a rule to ban negative content on the web.

In the absence of such a ban, Mi-nister Tifatul Sembiring said he would summon ISPs to help stop the spread of the clips, Antara news agency reported.

He said he hadn't seen the video but a report on them from his subordinates made him feverish. Why would anyone tape such a private thing?

Following the passage of the controversial 2008 Information and Electronic Transaction Law, the ministry had proposed a regulation that would justify government control of multimedia content. The plan was dropped following uproar and a rebuke from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

'Velvet Silver Media held the license to publish Playboy in Indonesia but its offices have since shut down.'

as you can see the_prince... they held a licence to publish the magazine.... where were they breaking the law

? If there was an issue with it before, why did they grant "Playboy" a licence... as Azi says.... everyone knows what "Playboy" is.... my god... the name says it all....

Azi, sorry Darlin, I think you got it a bit mixed up:

"scantily clothed women riling free speech activists".

you missed a comma it should read:

"scantily clothed women, riling free speech activists".

Meaning this whole thing p*ssed off the activists so they were angry about him being prosecuted:-)

If he broke the Indonesian law, he should be punished. If not, he shouldn't.

It is THAT simple

Anyone knows what guidelines and rules of such licenses that he must have accepted to abide to in order to get such a license?

its not just to imprison Erwin Arnada. At most they should have simply fined him however even that's too harsh as its not like he opened office illegally. Those in power who issued him the licence should be the ones blamed here. seriously what were they thinking?

Strange case.. When the license was issued, apprently there were other magazines which weere more risque.

I suppose it shows that Indonesia has "lurched" to teh right.

In 2007 the South Jakarta District Court acquitted the editor saying pictures that appeared in the magazine could not be categorized as obscene.

However, the supreme court has reversed the decision.

Good question. That deceivingly innocent looking bunny must have something to do with it!
