U.S.: Gay rights as human rights globally?

Bachus
By Bachus

What does Obama's new stance on gays--that gay rights are human rights to be globally supported--mean for American foreign policy? Especially for the Middle East and the Arab spring?

Here is an interesting article on the topic

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/05/06/MN7P1O9S23.D...

"As President Obama struggles with the politics of gay issues at home, his administration is drawing cheers from human rights groups for its commitment to gay rights around the globe.

In the past several months, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered a speech at the United Nations that dramatically shifted the international human rights focus to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, dedicated $3 million to help promote LGBT rights worldwide, and distributed educational materials to U.S. embassies to keep diplomats alert to gay rights issues.

U.S. involvement was essential in the passage of a U.N. resolution expressing "grave concern" about abuses and violations of gay and lesbian rights, as well as the first debate on gay issues before the U.N. Human Rights Council."

If 'everyone is free to do what they want' does that include gays and lesbians? It would seem that you would agree with the protections of liberty to individuals that the president is espousing.

The problem of the US foreign policy is that, they like tailor make a dress then they want the world to wear it, however,no it won't fit.

Gay, bi or lesbian or straight, it's up to people to decide? The US can't be the role model for everything.

Look how many years did it take for women suffrage?

What happened to the Indians (native Americans) ?

What about African Americans and the civil rights movements ? and the list goes on and on.

US first amendment and the establishment clause suggests the idea of "Separation of church and state" however that's not the case in every country, nor that every country would favor this.

Everyone is free to do what they want just don't impose any resolution under the international community to do so.

People's Gay Front of Judea, they can f**k off. Israel are only aligned to the Popular Gay front of Judea. (Palestinian chapter)

There is a rumour that Mossad is training the Judian Gay People's Front to carry out covert attacks "behind" the scenes. Or is it the People's Gay Front of Judia :O(

Wow, someone even managed to get Israel involved in this homosexual conspiracy. I'm sure Mossad's aim is to pump as many gays into the Middle East as possible so the Arabs die out...

Not the human race - just those nice heterosexuals ;o(

Ya. Gays are totally after all heterosexuals. They really want the whole human race to die out....cause that makes sense.

Gays rights.... another word for ANTI-Heterosexual. Another subversive idea from America.... tool of Isreal.

Every human being has the right to live without the threat of violence or persecution. That's all gay rights are in the international context. Look at Uganda where gays are being murdered and people are calling for the death penalty for homosexuality.

Last time I checked the GCC (even Saudi) generally just turns a blind eye to homosexuality. That's fine.

I really do not want to make it my business to judge what other people do in their bedrooms.

Their life, their choice.

Everybody, no matter what gender they prefer, should have the same rights.

Gay people are human beings too and we must make sure no human being is dehumanized or demonized for their beliefs, gender, or sexuality.

I may not agree with their choice, and would definitely argue against the idea sometimes as part of my right to free speech but I have no right to impose my choice on them.

anyone sexual orientation. But personally, same sex marriage is a no-no. My view only. But of course, Obama is a politician and politicians knows no boundaries when it comes to getting a vote.

Heck yeah! Let these people do what they want! If they are gay, straight, bi, none of my business.

Personally I don't agree nor support it.

I don't think theres anything wrong with same sex marriage if the people are happy and causing no one else any harm. Live and let live.

The other day while discussing this issue with a friend about Gay rights, an interesting topic started, while we were discussing Gay rights to be able to have same sex partners then why is it seen so undignified for polygamist to have more than one partner! Isn't that also violation of Human rights?

By Mandilulur• 13 May 2012 23:33

No, gay rights merely means the ability to live and work without violence or discrimination.
