The stairway to heaven led us only to hell

Music just isn't what it used to be. I find myself envious of those who grew up in the 60s and 70s cause of all the incredible music they had...you can't turn on the radio today or any music channel or go to virgin and not find absolute garbage when it comes to music. All the songs seem to have the same pounding mantra: "sex gangster me you sweet turn you on blablabla..."

I know that most people just say "well if you don't like it then don't listen to it" but that's missing the point! Music in some sort of way defines the generation that grew up while it was created...the music of the 60s and 70s reflects 3 things: sex, drugs and rock and roll...but not quite...they represent the rebellion against the conservative times before and that is worthy of respect whether you love all three or none.

I wish that i could have grown up able to witness the beatles in concert...or pink floyd, led zeppelin, the doors, supertramp, the who, bob dylan...any of those! Instead, the only option i have is to go watch a Colombian Shakira shake her moneymaker at me (which would be all nice and good if she wasn't singing).

Is there anybody out there that feels the same way?! Or am i just obsessive when it comes to music...

UKeng, Adam and the Ants were "New Romantic". Up there with Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Japan etc. I NEVER bought a shirt with ruffles or wore makeup - big girls blouses the lot of 'em ;o)

I did spike my hair though ... back in the day when I had some!

Did you Google it first?

We all agree thet the music of the past was representative of its era. Therefore I think the music of today represents This era. The music like the artists fame seems to be short lived , disposable if you like. The rythms and lyrics are shallow and often aggressive , charachteristics that are visible and often admired in society nowadays.

The only new song I seem to remember is "Hips dont lie..."

Oh baby when you talk like that

You make a woman go mad

So be wise and keep on

Reading the signs of my body...

Shakira, Shakira !!!

There should be some deeper meaning....Maybe I got to read her hips...

notfromhere, my mom used to do the same with me and now i actually give her good music to listen to from the 70s! i totally judged you right now by the way hahaha...you are now the ideal mom :D

i feel bad for teenagers growing up today...though all music is accesible, the one being shoved into their ears can only be described as hypnotic...it's not good, it's not positive, it has no message...all it has is flashy words and flair...

and don't worry, your son's secret is safe with me ;)

Jeeeez khanan, thanks a lot. Are you trying to make me feel old??? 80s and 90s music? What are you doing in here, this is the old fogeys thread :-P

Zayd, I have no idea what my teenagers listen to-- I don't want to know, lol! But thankfully they do like some of the old stuff too, maybe because they've been forced to listen to it all their lives.

And don't tell any of my son's friends, but he and I have been known to sing along together to Bohemian Rhapsody while driving in the car :-)

Great stuff. the "Irish Pipe and Fiddle Tunes".. Wonder how many copies it sold ? Is it any better than "Tubular Bells" ?

At least in those days people didn't lip synch... There was an uproar last week because some guy called Kanye West tried to actually sing and made a real idiot of himself..

i second the motion!! how i wish i could have been born earlier, i was born in '74 and i grew up listening to artists like neil young, led zeppelin and all those folk singers. almost all of today's music has been rehashed, when you listen to the radio these days lyrics become so familiar as most singers cover old songs which is not cool!!! especially i hate boybands!!!!!!

I grew up punk and loved it. I remember well though, buying my first ever single - Bohemian Rhapsody - Let's face it, if that's the start to my music collection, how can I possibly go wrong!

My first punk single was the Stranglers 'Pink EP' with "Peaches" as the A side.

Remember all those coloured vinyl records? - they rocked! Message in a Bottle on Green, Penetration's 'Moving Targets' LP on Glow-in-the-dark luminous yellow, John Cooper Clarke's 'Gimmix' on triangular orange. Those indeed were they days :o)

I feel the same way. I have to give exception to some modern bands though. My best buddy used to utter sarcastic lines like "Stairway to heaven, If you've never heard of this song, you don't deserve to live" and I thought it was really funny. Songs written these days are all pretty much, how should I say this, plain rubbish. The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Def Leppard, What else do I have to say?

cheers,

paul

You are dead-right, zayd. There hasn't been written any good music since the early 80s. They do make good products, though, videos and so. But, honestly, I can't remember any of the "new" songs. I can't read a "message", I cannot enjoy a virtuous musician. Why do you think the "old" guys are touring again?
