personally I did not find any solid argument to term Watson a racialist from the interview(may be I'm missing something). All he says is something revolving around "we dont know..". Are his comments being misinterpreted? Full txt of the interview is given here.

What do you guys think?

Tigasin:"Racialism entails a belief in the existence and significance of racial categories, but not necessarily in a hierarchy between the races, or in any political or ideological position of racial supremacy."

But racism n racialism has been used interchangeably. I guess its a more diplomatic way of calling someone a racist? :-p

abt IQ, nowadays the emphasis is more on EQ frm what I hear and rightly so!

Well the author of the article says it pretty much can't help us. That the last grounds in the battle against racism will be in the laboratory, not at the lunch counter.

Exactly Gypsy , it can become a can of worms! B

but the question is how could this kinda research help people? One thing I can think of is implanting genes for intelligence/strength to create more intelligent/strong people? its scary!!

Someone explain to me the difference between racism and racialism. I have never heard the word racialism before.

Also, I think IQ tests are a poor indicator of intelligence. For example, I have a high IQ and I am not that smart. I think it is more an indication of how fast you can process information than raw intelligence.

Just call me Tigasin. That's what I'm talking about

There's a whole can of worms that could be started about this. I mean, what would the impact on society be IF it was proven that blacks are less intelligent then whites, or Semetic people are genetically more violent then say Orientals. Does this mean we simply accept this? There's a lot of moral and ethical issues in there.

However, as society continues to evolve you'll see a lot more races inter-breeding, making many of these theories obsolete.

Yeah Tigasin... Watson himself was said to have low IQ but

"....he enrolled at the University of Chicago when he was merely 15 and earned his B.S. in zoology there in 1947 at the age of 19 and a Ph.D. in zoology from Indiana University at age 22. He was 34 when he won the Nobel Prize. Not too shabby for a guy with a "low" IQ."

He was talking about African blacks and he said he didn't really know that there are elements such as medicine, social inequality and many other things that contribute. You could argue that it is only in the last 30 years that American blacks have had increased opportunities that allow them to compete on an equal(ish) footing. Therefore, analysis would not be meaningful until several more generations have passed.

Gypsy, the article actually calls him a racialist, not racist. yeah some hav called him racist too.

Yeah I do agree with u on the point abt him not being aware abt the impact tht may cause on a politically correct society, being the typical absent minded quirky kinda scientific genius.

Well, if he becomes successful in finding out that race or genetics has an outcome, what good would it do to a world which already has enough prejudices based on race?

How would it benefit humanity as a whole?

He says

"I don't think we can prevent the discoveries. [That would] prevent any possibility of using knowledge to make people's lives better, so I don't think that's the way to go"

What I'm wondering is how would such a discovery make people's lives better?

I'm all for science and research, but donno why things abt human genome kinda make me uneasy.

You think Tigasin??? I thought he was saying that regardless of the environment or culture, blacks are genetically not as smart as whites (but they are genetically better athletes, etc).

I think he is talking more about cultural differences than racial differences. So Ethipians score low on IQ tests? Big deal, so what? Its not meaningful because IQ tests are not designed specifically with Ethiopians in mind.

I am sure that a US born and well educated person of Ethiopian heritage would do just as well as anyone else. But there is no doubt, that cultural issues have a big impact on lifestyle, wealth, acadamic success and quality of life.

I don't see how it is racist to say that. But in this pseudo politically correct environment there is always someone ready to jump on you and call you a racist because you say something they don't want to hear.

Brit expat:talking abt physical attributes alone, yeah the environment conditions in which a group of people have traditionally evolved would result in them being better at some fields?

Then We're talking abt physical/mental adaptation (possibly thru generations)here and not abt genetic background, right?

I don't think Watson is a racist at all. I think he's simply looking for answers in DNA and genetics, and probably (like many scientists) doesn't think about the impact of what he says on our poltically correct society. I don't think he has enough evidence to prove his theories yet, but he has every right to explore whether or not race or genetics has an outcome on individuals.

he's entitled to his opinion. Its like the sports commentator who believed that Black Boxers were better because they had "thicker" skins and did not cut as easy..

my own opinion is that the sorroundings and opportunities offered have a bearing on the aptitude, demeanor and personality of the person..
