Doha: Qatar plans to introduce Identity Cards for all its residents in a year’s time, a report published in the local Arabic daily Al Raya revealed.

The report said that the Qatari Ministry of Interior has signed a contract with a private company to launch the ID card project as well as introducing iris scan at entry points.

The implementation of the ID card project will cost a total of 31 million Qatari Riyals and is expected to be completed in a year.

The objective is to have a single data bank that will ensure smooth transactions between various public departments in the country.

That should be implemented long time ago. Now I do hope they have birth and marriages certificates as well.

I think maybe these are the smart cards with the chip on them. Expats just have cards with barcodes.
