Open Letter to Barack Hussein Obama, President-elect of the United States of America
- by Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia - 2009-01-02

January 1, 2009

Dear Mr. President,

I did not vote for you in the Presidential Election because I am Malaysian.

But I consider myself one of your constituents because what you do or say will affect me and my country as well.

I welcome your promise for change. Certainly your country, the United States of America needs a lot of changes.

That is because America and Americans have become the most hated people in the world. Even Europeans dislike your arrogance. Yet you were once admired and liked because you freed a lot of countries from conquest and subjugation.

It is the custom on New Year's day for people to make resolutions. You must have listed your good resolutions already. But may I politely suggest that you also resolve to do the following in pursuit of Change.

1) Stop killing people. The United States is too fond of killing people in order to achieve its objectives. You call it war, but today's wars are not about professional soldiers fighting and killing each other. It is about killing people, ordinary innocent people by the hundreds of thousands. Whole countries will be devastated.

War is primitive, the cavemen's way of dealing with a problem. Stop your arms build up and your planning for future wars.

2) Stop indiscriminate support of Israeli killers with your money and your weapons. The planes and the bombs killing the people of Gaza are from you.

3) Stop applying sanctions against countries which cannot do the same against you.

In Iraq your sanctions killed 500,000 children through depriving them of medicine and food. Others were born deformed.

What have you achieved with this cruelty? Nothing except the hatred of the victims and right-thinking people.

4) Stop your scientists and researchers from inventing new and more diabolical weapons to kill more people more efficiently.

5) Stop your arms manufacturers from producing them. Stop your sales of arms to the world. It is blood money that you earn. It is un-Christian.

6) Stop trying to democratize all the countries of the world. Democracy may work for the United States but it does not always work for other countries.

Don't kill people because they are not democratic. Your crusade to democratize countries has killed more people than the authoritarian Governments which you overthrew. And you have not succeeded anyway.

7) Stop the casinos which you call financial institutions. Stop hedge funds, derivatives and currency trading. Stop banks from lending non-existent money by the billions.

Regulate and supervise your banks. Jail the miscreants who made profits from abusing the system.

8) Sign the Kyoto Protocol and other international agreements.

9) Show respect for the United Nations.

I have many other resolutions for change which I think you should consider and undertake.

But I think you have enough on your plate for this 2009th year of the Christian Era.

If you can do only a few of what I suggest, you will be remembered by the world as a great leader. Then the United States will again be the most admired nation. Your embassies will be able to take down the high fences and razor-wire coils that surround them.

May I wish you a Happy New Year and a great Presidency.

Yours Sincerely,

Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad

(Former Prime Minister of Malaysia)

Not everything that comes from the West i.e. America is good. But it's not all bad either.

Not every Muslim is bad. But Islamic ideologies seem --so far-- not able to offer but the rejection of the other cultures and faiths.

All recent terror acts that shacked the entire globe from the west i.e. 11/09, Spain, London, Bally, Mumbai…to Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia,…have been the result of Islamism/Arabism that --is not only based to reject the other cultures and faiths but—consists of imposing different cultures and faiths on the other… by force.

Do not ask others i.e. USA to change when main change is required from the heart of countries that are urgently asked to reform their destructive education system to a positive one. To stop violating human rights in their own countries when there is a difference in World's vision. Constructive Change requires courage, open-minded and heartfelt people.

Can you?

We, the people of the Middle East, want to live and let the other live his right to exist too and that is designed by our Creator. We are starving for a genuine Love and Peace[-of-mind]

Are you?

Think about it. Then think to re-write or to fix your letter to the President of the United States that must be based on a minimum level of transparency.

Can you?

Many insightful and constructive projects took place in the region i.e. The Qatar Foundation [Education city] in the last few years. That is to be well noticed. Yet, a lot of efforts are still to be done. That's also to be well underlined.

When destructive-minded-leaders recognize the fact that Humanity and Human values cannot wait they would definitely know what to do.

Smile For Peace!

Just read this one. Way late, I know. But I'm suspicious. I'm trying to check if he really wrote that. If he did, then I agree with britexpat and mandilulur.

Speed, can you please post the source/link of your article? I posted back home as well to see if anyone can give me any thoughts on it from there as well. For now, it looks more like someone out to discredit Tun Dr. M - and there are many who would resort to underhanded tactics.

I personally know people who have dealt with or been in meetings with Tun Dr. M. - people of true substance who don't kiss rear ends, no matter what the cost to their reputation or jobs/pockets. And their opinion is that he's actually a very good visionary leader and handles meetings well. Nobody dares to mess with him but do so behind his back, poke grassroots to act up and cause trouble, make mountains out of molehills. etc. etc.

He's not perfect - very far from it and has loads of faults, certainly. But a lot of good as well. So too the current PM Badawi, also with a load of faults but overall, both have been and are good for the country. Malaysia would not be where it is today without Tun Dr M. That is a fact which many who enjoy benefits currently fail to appreciate. It's like the Malay saying "kacang lupakan kulit" (Lit: "Peanut forgetting its shell") meaning forgetting from where we came from, counting our blessings. we should be proactive and move forward instead of backbiting and using underhanded methods.

I say that Badawi has done a lot of good - under his premiership, there was a fair and transparent election. There was a shake up in the public service and more transparency. Yes, corruption still alive BUT less and public officers were more careful.

How do I know? because I was a practising lawyer for 13 years. And I wasn't simply a pen pusher and order giver. I could have been but clients' interests were paramount. I did many things personally when necessary - including attending at govt depts to get things done and usually managed it. Over the years, I've experienced the improvements and that's why I say this.

Things were getting better. I hope it continues. Badawi was smart, but made mistakes - which certain quarters pick on to say he's weak. Appearances can be deceiving. He has strength of character, as does Mahathir.

Let's just try and be practical..

I did not vote for you in the Presidential Election because I am Malaysian.

But I consider myself one of your constituents because what you do or say will affect me and my country as well.

No's 1-3 are impossible to implemment..

4,5 are not on because the US economy revolves around the D.O.D and its "partners"..

6 is a tool used to justify its actions to the people, when all else fails..

7, brings in too much revenue to the treasury..

8, he has agreed to lok at

9 , can't do, because the U.N is a tool to be used as and when required..

I'm afraid that sweeping, unsubstantiated generalizations are usually not taken very seriously. But #8, signing Kyoto, is concrete, specific and implementable. Good idea.
