NYU in Dubai champions worker rights

This is just an excerpt:
"Last week, New York University (NYU) revealed it will demand that all companies involved in the construction of its Middle East campus in Abu Dhabi follow strict guidelines dictating the fair and proper treatment of all labourers who work on the project.
These guidelines dictate how many hours per week labourers can work, how often they are paid, that overtime is paid and voluntary and that workers are entitled to paid holidays.
They also stipulate that employers cover or reimburse any costs accrued by employees in the recruitment process and that companies are prohibited from withholding personal documents, such as passports, from labourers."
Do you think something like this would ever happen here in Qatar?
Why hasn't this happened before now do you think?

You have your value judgements....but at least I don't resort to foul language
John,
Thanks mate.
As most of the QLers got it, I am not here neither to criticize with no reason nor to please anybody.
Oryx not only has shown us, her limitations (which I couldn’t care less until she decided to mess up with me), but also lives in a cocoon shell protected from reality.
Either she has no ability to have an objective opinion about the reality that surrounds her or this reality is so much better than the one she left back in Mexico that she got infected with Stockholm syndrome.
Whatever it is, I have always respected her but now it’s too much. Not only she isn’t able to contribute with substantial comments but she is also trying to condition others to write whet they think.
Sad, but I won’t satisfy here on this one ;)
Anyway, once again thanks for your support!
Err, Ice Maiden, NYU isn't picking up the tab for anything, it's Dubai's nickel.
Mandi
the bottomline will always be the money. Is NYU prepared to pick up the tab which is what the contractor will ultimately do?

Well good luck to them - ! I hope they succeed.
It's a nice thought by NYU but I don't think will be applied in reality. The contractor as ever will look to cut costs and providing good working conditions isn't very high on the agenda of Contracting firms in Dubai right now.

OK we ALL can read how much you hate living here and how much you look down on the people - you just berate everything
well you know your posts are getting very tedious because they are so repetitive
around here...too many people picking on my country lately! and I did see a thread recently where some people were defending current labor practices by saying that at least the people are better off here than back home; otherwise they wouldn't come here in the first place or stay. pretty disturbing stuff to a mind that's been brainwashed by Western propaganda for decades!
AmericanDarling,
Everybody here agrees with you, what you perceived as a non endorsement, was a sarcastic comment (to make fun of those who blindly blame Americans for every single bad thing that happens in the universe ;)
so why shouldn't they have some say about the labor practices used to build it? it's not like they are trying to change the policies of the whole country (yet). I think it's great that someone is trying to make sure that laborers are treated like humans instead of cattle, and it's sad that America's going to be villainized for it just because it's the only country that doesn't care about its reputation for being nosey getting any worse.
(note that there are many, many things about America and its policies that I vehemently disagree with. BUT I think that there are many people who simply always condemn the country - no matter what it does - based on what they don't like about it, and politics and ethics simply aren't that black and white.)
Why isn't it practice here? Your guess is as good as mine.
Here in Qatar, they would be accused of offending Qatari lifestyle, just like that journalist who wrote about the "family days" and then the mods would delete the post giving a silly excuse ;)
i personally agree with you very much on that :D
Damn those Americans, always sticking their nose in where it doesn't belong!
