RSPCA moves to ban Halal slaughter in Australia
ASHLEY HALL: With Australia's live cattle exports to Indonesia still in limbo the RSPCA is now turning the focus to the issue of ritual killing in Australia.
It's known as Halal or Kosher slaughter in the Muslim and Jewish communities and it's carried out according to religious laws.
In Australia, the national Halal standard requires abattoirs to stun animals before their throat is cut.
But a number of Australian abattoirs have been given government approval to kill animals without stunning.
The RSPCA says it's a brutal practice and should be banned.
You had me until your last post. Why does everything have to be a conspiracy against Islam? Perhaps, like me, most people are ignorant of slaughtering practices and need to be educated. Perhaps, studies like the one you mention will show better methods of slaughter for non-Muslims for the benefit of all farm animals.
hatsoff too good
Interesting study. Perhaps this needs to be passed on to the RSPCA.

The scientific facts
A team at the university of Hannover in Germany examined these claims through the use of EEG and ECG records during slaughter. Several electrodes were surgically implanted at various points of the skull of all the animals used in the experiment and they were then allowed to recover for several weeks. Some of the animals were subsequently slaughtered the halal way by making a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck, cutting the jugular veins and carotid arteries of both sides together with the trachea and esophagus but leaving the spinal cord intact. The remainder were stunned before slaughter using a captive bolt pistol method as is customary in Western slaughterhouses. The EEG and ECG recordings allowed to monitor the condition of the brain and heart throughout.
The Halal method
With the halal method of slaughter, there was not change in the EEG graph for the first three seconds after the incision was made, indicating that the animal did not feel any pain from the cut itself. This is not surprising. Often, if we cut ourselves with a sharp implement, we do not notice until some time later. The following three seconds were characterised by a condition of deep sleep-like unconciousness brought about by the draining of large quantities of blood from the body. Thereafter the EEG recorded a zero reading, indicating no pain at all, yet at that time the heart was still beating and the body convulsing vigorously as a reflex reaction of the spinal cord. It is this phase which is most unpleasant to onlookers who are falsely convinced that the animal suffers whilst its brain does actually no longer record any sensual messages.
The Western method
Using the Western method, the animals were apparently unconscious after stunning, and this method of dispatch would appear to be much more peaceful for the onlooker. However, the EEG readings indicated severe pain immediately after stunning. Whereas in the first example, the animal seizes to feel pain due to the brain starvation of blood and oxygen – a brain death, to put it in laymen’s terms – the second example first causes a stoppage of the heart whilst the animal still feels pain. However, there are no unsightly convulsions, which not only means that there is more blood retention in the meat, but also that this method lends itself much more conveniently to the efficiency demands of modern mass slaughter procedures. It is so much easier to dispatch an animal on the conveyor belt, if it does not move.
the other rule is, the animal should not be slaughtered next to or in front of other animals. The question is which abettoir follows this rule - in Islamic countries or on-islamic countries?
is there a disconnect?
"According to Islamic tradition, the animal is brought to the place of slaughter and laid down gently so as to not injure it. The blade must be kept hidden until the very last moment while the jugular of the animal is felt. The conventional method used to slaughter the animal involves cutting the large arteries in the neck along with the esophagus and vertebrate trachea with one swipe of an non-serrated blade. Care must be taken that the nervous system is not damaged, as this may cause the animal to die before exsanguination has taken place. While blood is draining, the animal is not handled until it has died. If any other method is used its meat will not be halal."
And with the non-halal method, if in the animals contain some bacteria or virus in their brain, then it can spread from blood vessel to all the part of meat...and when you eat that meat, the virus and bacterias can spread to your body too...
When the blood is drained from the animal all the uric acid and other impurities found in blood are also drained. High uric acid consumption in meats is a primary reason for a debilitating disease called gout.
And they are arguing the halal slaughter is inhuman treatment in the articles.
Animal rights groups are saying "You can kill the animals but don't stun them, that's painful"
Yeah stunning is the problem, not killing.
it says inhuman treatment in the abattoir.
s_isale--Yes it does:

the ban on sending live animals to Indonesia has nothing to with halal slaughter.
Not just hype. Australia has placed a ban on sending live animals to Indonesia, and the Dutch are about to pass a law as well. I suspect this will be the then end of the wedge, as animal rights groups are relentless.
What are you people trying to say? Is that possible at all?...
its all for the media hype. those organisations get free publicity this way.
Stun the animal before cutting the throut?
For what? A little brain damage before dreath?
To be honest the Dutch story I linked above looks more serious in the short-term. I found it looking for the original story link.
Luckily i found it :o)

This is probably a storm in a teacup anyway, because "In Australia, the national Halal standard requires abattoirs to stun animals before their throat is cut."
However, a number of Australian abattoirs have been given government approval to kill animals without stunning.
The government has to decide whether these should be banned. So, we'll just have to wait and see..
Yep.
Is this something to do with the ban on Live animals to Indonesia?
I can't seem to find the link to the exact version of the story (its from ABC), but here is another version of it:
