Lets get it out in the open

Xena
By Xena

I am posting this in Politics and Culture, because i think this topic has a lot to do with both.

CL wants me to go and find out how many topics are opened about the East as opposed to the west. Obviously that's a bit impossible, as trying to sort through all the "love, food, job" threads, we'd be here all day copy and pasting. So rather, I am going to put the topics of discussion that have been posted about in the past.Feel free to add more.

1) Clothing
2) Child marriage
3) Iraq
4) Iran
5) Stoning
6) Thieft
7) Children left in Cars
8) Qatar winning 2022
9) Rape
10) Infidelity
11) Prophet Mohammed (PBUH)
12) Driving in Qatar
13) Qatar has too much money for its own good

There are hundreds of others, that I just cannot remember, but my point is this... no matter how many threads are opened regarding these 13 topics, mostly its for discussion - Yes, admittidly, there are those who open threads purely for sensationalsm value, but most people open these topics to discuss things.

We live in the eastern part of the world, I don't know about you, but generally news from the region I live in is what interests me.... Why is it that when anyone posts topics of this nature it is seen as been a muslim or asian hating thread? I don't get it. Why can a topic not be discussed civily? Why do people immediately take offence to the topic and start bashing everyone? Why is it that we westerners must be tolerant, but everyone else gets to be nasty AND when we westerners retaliate, its because we are racist, muslim-hating, bigots who clearly deserve whatever destruction is coming to them?

Unneccessary comments are posted on all threads opened, no matter what they are, because people feel threatened and need to make a dig - which then sends the posts into spiral.

I am sure I speak for most westerners when I say, we are sick to the back teeth of the hypocrisy - Don't expect to be able to have your opinion, if someone else cannot have theirs. And when someone calls you out on something, becoming nasty about their background isn't going to work.

Threads you feel are opened with an alternative purpose in mind, ignore that thread, don't show your hatred by posting. I am talking to every QL user, regardless of your nationality - I am done with posting on enflaming threads. I am going to go back to being the QL user I am known to be.

So, you can be our House Maid instead of Maid of Honor... according to our eastern (Arab) tradition but you'll have the Honor to wash our cars every morning in white "Western clothes" :P

I am reminded of the following story.. For Celtic , read East. For Rangers, read West :O)

Game day arrives in Glasgow, Scotland, and everyone's gearing up for the big showdown between the Rangers and the Celtics.

Seems this Ranger fan goes to have a few pints before the game and, in his befuddled state, ends up in the wrong end of the stadium. Poor chap's wearing his colours and he's surrounded by Celtics fans who are giving him the evil eye.

Too late! He's in too deep and figures the best thing he can do is try and wait 'til the game's over and make a quiet exit. The game starts and boom, boom! 2 goals for the Rangers! The Celtics fans are grumbling and staring

long and hard at the enemy in their midst. Finally, one of the biggest of the lot calls over to him.

"Oi! Go get me a bottle!"

At last, he can get away! "Ah, no, no, no... Don't be runnin' off! Leave one of your shoes!"

Well, he doesn't have much choice, so he gets the bottle, comes back and goes to put on his shoe, but there's a rather large turd sitting in it.

"Put. It. On." comes the command.

('Ha ha ha!')

Half time comes and goes and the 2nd half starts the same way. Boom, boom! 4-0! It's a wash-out, and he's really getting evil stares now!

"Oi! Go get me another bottle! And leave your other shoe!"

Well, he comes back and finds a similar situation.

('Ha ha ha!')

The game finally ends and our hero makes his way home feeling rather sorry for himself. On his way out, he bumps into a BBC camera crew who are interviewing people about football violence in general.

"Excuse me, sir? We're here asking people if they feel football violence is still a problem today, since today's game seemed fairly calm in the stands.

The fans were quite well-behaved, and we were wondering if you had any comments on the issue?"

It's all too much for him, and he grabs the microphone and screams, "Oi! You're bloody right I do!" He stares directly into the camera. "Football violence", he starts, "will never end in this country, so long as they are sh!ttin' in our shoes, and we're pissin' in their bottles!!"

REally a great post and a beautiful confession ever seen at Qatar Living :)

Tink, you Rocks Again.......with your balanced approach to the issues with harmonisation policy :)

I wish this could ever happen. The major reasons are our preconcieved thoughts, past-experiences and teachings (from history books), media feds, levels of education, and above all differences in opinion and cultural clash. Its a mixed bag full of various factors. Chances are least to have 'Global / Regional peace at QL'.

Arien: Like your selective approach, take it if good or leave it if bad.

Truth is....Easterners and Westerners all need to open their minds and accept that people are different. Not just necessarily cultures or nationalities but 'people' as individuals.

Some people drink alcohol some people don't...it's a choice you get to make. If everyone stopped judging people then the world would be a happier place.

It's a shame Gordon Ramsay's restaurant has closed down as I did enjoy it. However, as I said in a previous thread about 'no alcohol at the pearl' .... I changed my opinion about no alcohol being perhaps a good thing when I was informed that by fellow QL'ers that restaurants were on the verge of closing because of it.

So I did expect this to happen. It is safe to say that although its their 'country' and their rules, I had a much better experience when the wine was a flowing and have since usually dined elsewhere :)

By Miss Mimi• 12 Jun 2012 13:00
Miss Mimi

Uhhh, I don't think you need to read "between" lines, I think you just need to read.

Mozaismyhero said this "Allah decides who lives and dies so it is in his hands as they believe."

which is basically the long version of "Inshallah" than sajmarhab said not to bring religion into it, and I agreed, as the attitude of "Allah decides who lives and dies so it is in his hands as they believe" is not the result of religion, but rather the result of a lack of education about safety and a lack of enforcement of the law.

I know plenty of Muslims who not only know what Inshallah means, but how to use a child car seat.

And also, last time I checked, basically anyone living in this region for more than a week start using Inshallah on a daily basis, so I don't know how only Muslims use it.

Your showing your prejudices with that statement, not mine.

MM

Sorry i wasnt agreeing on how its mis interpretted...

"Islam has nothing to do with it. It's lack of education and enforcement that create the "Inshallah" attitude towards safety that persists here. Not religion."

.

So if you read the lines..Inshallah is being used by only muslims and hence they are....uneducated and ill informed people

So y bring inshallah and muslims categorically into a topic of seat belts...

By LethalArrow• 12 Jun 2012 12:13

its clearly a clash of cultures..if i put it a differnt way, some of the traditions in islam and say south asian coutries doesnt exactly go hand in hand..for example the dress code...am sure many westerns find it amusing as to y women might dress in black from head to toe...n then they go on criticizing...it goes from there to sarcastic comments even on future threads which is nothing to do with religion...

and yes to be honest any muslims will get offended if provoked about questions on Prophet Mohamed(pbuh)for example...so keep away..its easy as that...the difference is even if someone westerner actually bashes Jesus Christ, it might be ironical that a muslim might actually get offended by that too...

simply put religion and religious values, culture needs to be repected and understood..treat it with respect and u ll get respect

Now, Yes i agree there are Few Qler's who love to Bash West, but then that is morally & ethically not acceptable.

I have some concerns about West's Policy, & have raised it on QL, ample of times, Mandi gets annoyed with my comments sometimes, & some thinks i am a Conspiracy Theorist, Soo what, what i think & feel is right, I say it in a Respectable Manner....

Xena i know exactly what u mean when u posted this and how some comments are anti western but sadly as MM pointed out some comments by many westerns, who maybe either new to the culture or simply admant to have their way, keep bashing the culture of this land and muslims...

I have read so many rants and sarcastic comments on many topics like dress code, ramadan and even on seat belts (today) etc being criticized which many westerns dont like...calling people from this part of the land and from south asia and east being arrogant, distasteful and uneducated

as mentioned...no one likes to be criticized hence even werterns should kindly stop thinking themselves as ingenious speacies and try to blend with the culture...

I too have many western friends who are amoug the most courteous but i fear its all hipocrasy at times...like u said Xena i am also sick and tired of a hypocritical thinking all the time...

You and I haven't had issues before, but in the last few weeks, your posts here have become aggressive... mine have too.... People whose posts I will be staying away from in the future:

Babu/Aarkhi/Choti - whatever he goes by now days

Sarjmarhab

Anyone who posts derogatory statements about the west - because I know (even though I don't think about it at the time) they are just looking for reaction....

I pride myself on being a level headed person who sees the good and that bad with everything - even if others can only look at things from a one-sided angle. The last few weeks, I haven't been so level headed.

But, this thread has given me insite, while writing the OP, alot of the anger I had, evaporated as I was making my point.

Anyway, I am done with this thread now. I have made my statements.

MM.. I know .. guilty as charged.. will never forget to write ":D", ":P", ":)" .. "LOL" or " ha ha" in my jokes

Xena.. Let me guess which particular comment are you talking about .. it was a thread something about USA or West and i said something like "realize and admit your bad side you bunch of hypocrites" .. i think thats the MOST racist comment (according to you) i have made on this forum so far.. yeah, i admit that.. but hey, I call a Muslim hypocrite too, a Muslim who'd tell me he hates America and then goes to Mcdonalds for nice heavy meal .. a Muslim who'd tell me pork is haram but enjoys 5 -10 bottles of heineken at some club every firday night!!!

Everyone has a bad side including me and you, East and West... and there is nothing wrong in admitting it.. nobody is just made perfect!!

It appears there are mindsets created here within ourselves...a joke by CL is considered as a hate for MM and a thread by anyone/ someone is considered as a preaching post...guess there lies the problem. But hey, looks like Xena had a real bad day to be in such a mood quite unlike of her or may be a pent up outburst. Hope she is feeling better now...:)

Anyways, take a chill pill guys...its Ok so far we accept and understand that I and you would at times react excatly the same depending upon something else which would have happened somewhere else its all well...shake hands (or whatever each one likes) and move on...

Yalla!!!

What’s wrong with Xena’s comment? I think she nailed on the head for those Qler's who think their shyt has no stink!

"But it doesn't explain why SOME countries in the East are as poor as dirt: you can feel as much offended it won’t make those eastern counties any better. Yes true lots of poor as dirt countries in the East with people living in slums lacking most basic human needs like clean water and a roof over their heads that are nothing like the slums in the west which Miss Mimi mentioned and yes they have street beggars all over the place who attach themselves to the windows of vehicles to beg for money as those same cars drive on potholed roads, along with cattle that walk in town centers...

You have nothing to apologize for Xena.

I think babu and sajmarhab are the two people who inevitably start the fights on this forum. LP and mozaismyhero can also say incredibly inflammatory and sarcastic things that can cause problems, but they also sometimes give really insightful comments. I don't think babu or sajmarhab have EVER made an insightful or useful comment. They just cause problems.

Lets see where those comments came from, and why I may have said them, shall we?

First off you have Babu and his comments directly after the OP. Then you have Sajmarhaba and his “west” attacking comments.

This is what makes us angry. Instead of just skipping the thread if you have nothing good to say, you go on and start your nonsence. If you left well enough alone, then so would we, but why should we, when at every turn you are undermining our posts and trying your own agenda and nastiness.

Captain_Lost said and here i was thinking Miss ...

and here i was thinking Miss Mimmi is finally leaving us..

Why do you all hate MM so much? Is it because she talks truth most of the time... truths that you cannot handle?

As one of the expat im encouraging each one of us to follow & respect dress code here in Qatar as I can still see in public places some expatriates wearing revealing clothes. Maybe in our country it was allowed but not here. We are all now in their land so let us all give respect public decency. Wear proper clothes. I have read now in Doha news Organizers are calling this campaign “One of Us” - not “No Nudity” - and are revamping the Twitter account. In hopes of educating the expat community on how to dress without offending, a group of Qatari women have recently launched a modesty campaign called “No Nudity” on Twitter.

“We are all now in their land so let us all give respect public decency. Wear proper clothes.”

As for this clothing thread, it was nothing but a command, and I am sorry, but I am a grown woman whose mother hasn’t said anything about her wardrobe since I was a teenager – I am tired of people coming on here to preach.

People don’t like being told what to do, and that's alls that happens on QL, people bullying and telling others what to do.... we are all guilty of it, its got to stop.

So, if you and your group stop being so derogatory and stop making outright rude remarks on any threads that are posted, I (cannot speak for everyone) will stop being retaliatory.

And CL, it takes a big person to admit to “bashing” on QL, which I have done twice on this thread. Can you admit the same?

I have a number of friends from the UK, other parts of Europe and a few from Australia and US, and each has their own sense of humour. While, it is much easier to retort to and understand their humour in a direct conversation, most would look offensive while reading the written word.

I always believe that the written word doesn't convey emotions and it is very easy to reciprocate hatefully. That being said, there is a lot of unnecessary provocation at times which is difficult to digest for the more educated, literate and travelled Easterner.

By Miss Mimi• 12 Jun 2012 09:50

I agree with you Prism that those words were uncalled for. There are western countries with slums and poverty as well.

However, knowing the person who said it, I think it was said out of anger.

There are certain people on this site who say things just to get that kind of response. And we are all only human, and when we feel attacked, we go on the defensive and say things we may later regret.

Personally I think most people on this site are able to have decent, relevant discussions. However there are a few (and I can count them on one hand) who absolutely cannot comment on a subject without bashing or trying to incite hatred. It's best to ignore these people and move on with the discussion.

By Captain_Lost• 12 Jun 2012 09:26
Captain_Lost

Good Morning People,

Xena.. let me start by the thread this discussion started from... this one:

http://qatarliving.com/node/3083252

Now lets see, who posted hatred, racist comments on that thread the most ?? and who was getting offended and mad??

I mean Why do you expect "Easterners" not to get offended when you do not have enough patience to tolerate one thing against West??

About these 13 threads you mentioned "no matter how many threads are opened regarding these 13 topics, mostly its for discussion" .. Yes, they are "Opened" for discussion but then filled with crap, hatred and racism..

here's an example of one of these threads that falls under the category of "Clothing" posted by an expat lady where she said something like "Let's respect local culture and laws of the country we live in"

and bam.. she was targeted and bullied by you and some of your westerner friends (Old Qlers) as if she had done or said something really bad.. Just like you don't like people telling you what to do or what not to.. the same way people don't like to hear you preaching them whats right or wrong for them.

Mind it .. i clearly understand the difference between criticism and questioning.. IF anyone has any question about anything related to me, my religion or nation I'd be more than happy to answer them.. but if they are going to bash and criticize my religion, nation etc... i'll use everything in my power to stop them and make them realize how sh*ty their existence in this world is.

There are people on this forum who like to bash and talk negative about West or Non Muslims but then there are people who like attacking East or Muslims.. So if you are going to join the Eastern bashing gang, I'm definitely going to join the other one.. Simple as that

I think certain people are more open and tolerant to other nationalities and those who aren't..You disagree with someone they become hateful and nasty..Say's alot more about them..I haven't been on QL as long as others but find it just to be mostly hateful and very unwelcoming by some..We all have an opinion and aren't always going to agree with each others opinions but really that's ok it's what makes us individuals..

Xena, I think you have the answer right there. Most threads are open for 'civil' discussion; but there are always one or two who can instigate and insult.

Also, there is a group of people who believe they are always right and cannot take a counter-argument, the reason why most threads turn hateful beyond a point.

And there are others (plead guilty) that feel it is best to ignore all the hateful, insulting posts and do not even bother to post.

We cannot please everybody, this is an open forum and people can/will/would post everything what they want, whether relevant or not with the topics., it's always up to us, (as an individual poster) on how to deal with it., it's either we let it affect us, ignore it, enjoy it or just let it slide...

I always just bear in mind that being in an open forum I have to accept that I will be dealing with people who have different points of view, different level of maturity and stupidity, and to each his own.

Though I am with you on this one Xena, but as I've said, we cannot please everybody ;)

It is getting Rediculous, Honestly it is Getting to the Point where I don't even read Some Good Threads posted by Old Q'lers because There is always Someone that is Bashing Someone else in it...

Now you should all deal with this Non-Sense, Couple of Years back People use to Come on QL Ask a Question and would get an Straight Forward Answer, But Now if Someone Ask a Question rather then Posting a Straight Forward reply Some one would post a Smart Arse answer which is not even related to the Topic, and He/She thinks they are Soo Cool....
