KSA woman poet woos judges, angers conservati

This is only an excerpt from the article:

"A Saudi housewife’s poems denouncing extremist fatwas by Muslim clerics as evil have earned her death threats but could also win her a $1.3 million (£864,000) poetry contest on Emirati TV.

If on March 31 Hissa Hilal is announced the winner of the Million’s Poet competition aired on Abu Dhabi state television, she will walk away with the grand prize from the competition, which draws masters of bedouin dialect poetry, known as Nabati, which is highly appreciated by Gulf Arabs.

But Hilal has drawn the wrath of Islamist conservatives in her country after criticising its strict segregation of the sexes and blasting fatwas that reject an easing to allow women to take on jobs that are currently for men only."

Talk about a brave, forthright Gulf woman!
Go Hissa!!

salafist is not a name-calling.

When in Arab TV they interview someone like Abdulla Al Nafisi they introduce him as Salafi intellect & thinker

Again, Salafism in the gulf is mainstream like Islamic brotherhood in Egypt. What you refer to are "Jihadists" and are called usually "Takfiris" in Saudi Media but never a salafi

Abdullah bin Ubai found, wat he deserved.

I don't need ur clarification, as one of the Qler has already said enough, not to argue with a person, who is filled with a fake supremacy of being an arab.

Did you just called me a hypocrite?

first i'm a Shiite then practice tuqya and now a hypocrite

what's next?;)

Don't twist my words...i clarified my point earlier & i shall not repeat it

Maybe if you read about the political scene in the gulf in the past 30 years, you would understand what i wrote in my first post.

It's well known that political parties are prohibited in the gulf states. Therefore, the political trends were either Salafi or liberals and off course the government call the shots.

do you understand? or i need to repeat again ;)

@Genesis

Whenever u get time do read the last sermon of the Prophet (PBUH) where he had said, an Arab is not greater than a non-arab, an black is not greater than a white ... except for piety.

I am well aware of middle east events but I have seen here as well as in Asia when people don't agree with the arabs particularly saudis, they use the term salafi/wahabi etc for them and move aside, when asked what is salafi/wahabi, they don't have an answer.

If you call certain people wrong "kul haana burhanakum"... Produce ur proof or don't allege or use a term...whenever there is blast "Islamic Terrorist" term is used loosely, similarly when any incident of saudi is discussed, the terms Salafi/Wahabi r used loosely not just by non-muslims but even by ignorant "muslims"...

Anyways, no point in talking with someone who has sense of supremacy filled in just because of his native Arabic language.

It is just amazing how words can be twisted, due to agendas. Sadly not only amazing, but ever so predictable.

Repetetive and therefore boring, actually.

What comes around, goes around....

petty you.

read your history, i'm damn sure, u are from those who's forefather accepted Islam volitionally and u r just following it, unlike others. Better not to act like Munafiq "Abduallah bin Ubbi" and try to obey, wat ever said in Quran and Sunnah of Nabi.

PS: do i need a fatwa from you, that ajmi muslims are lesser then arabic?

Isn't it interesting that out of all our rich and varied culture and tradition and history the thing we get the most heated about is sex and sexuality. And I am speaking for Christians here as well.

Well, like you…I wish there weren’t all those names, sects & ideologies.

But it’s there…

Again, my original post was in relation to the original topic which is about Saudi’s political salafi/liberals war or words. And it’s not my problem, that you don’t follow up local GCC events

How do you know, i can't read Arabic? Did u get any dream about it? How do you know about my knowledge? You think only u know the history? I am a muslim and thats the reason i want to understand, whom do u call Wahabi or Salafi, etc (in your understanding, offcourse)...but Alas, if you would have used ur understanding of Arabic Language you would have implemented and believed in "Innalaaha Maa As Saabireen".....hope u know what it means...

Anyways, no issues with someone who distinguises muslims as liberals, extremist, salafi, wahabi etc etc...Based on your replies its pretty clear who is a fanatic.

Obviously you can’t read!

I wrote , I will not discuss it with you in particular. Simply because your knowledge is based on some interpretation you read & not on orginal books nor do you understand the Importance of the timeline.

Like I said you can’t even read Arabic. And yes it matters to understand the reason behind the ideology, the origin of the movement, ibn Taymiyyah writing, the jihad against Tartars and Crusaders, the reforms of Mohammed bin Abdul wahab, the formation of the Islamic brotherhood. All those Historical events are important to understand the salafi ideology

I don’t understand why you worry about all this , can’t you just be a Muslim! specially since when people from your region deeply think about the ideology, they either become fanatics or end up like salman rushdie, Taslima Nasreen or Ibn Warraq ;)

Ok Genesis, you can take the escape route out of here...its amazing isn't it?

You introduced the terms "Salafi and Wahabi" in this thread and when asked to explain what is Salafi and Wahabi you escape saying "Stop Hijacking"...haha...

Still you haven't replied who are SALAFI/WAHABI? Do u know or r just a blind poster?

In Islam, there is no 'secular', 'forward' Muslims, etc...

What I learned is only Two types.

1. Practicing Muslims (Following Quran and Sahih Hadeeths)

2. Non Practicing Muslims (You can deifine who is this)

Best wishes all of you brothers, via you guys we can learn more...

Thank you for your input

Its easy to criticise the West esp when you haven't been there and so we are a good way of shifting the blame.

I also find it worrying that young Muslims are so critical and quick to condemn other Muslims.

There is not compassion or understanding - just rapid judgement.

I find it very alarming in ones so young...its meant to be the era of awakening and learning

These competitions bring out the best and sometimes the worst in people. The fact that she decided to take this poen to the competition was probably because she knew that this would lead to controversy and might lead her to the victory :). Maybe?

Copy/paste is your expertise as most of you can’t even read or hardly speak Arabic , the original language of the Quran & Sunnah…

That’s why I’m not really keen to discuss religion with you

Although there have been many great salafi scholars in the past, including the leader of what’s known as wahabism today “Muhammad ibn Abd-al-Wahhab” who came to Correct the manyReligious misconceptions of the Arabic peninsula back in the 18th century. Wahabis or salafis today are consumed with Waving the stick of atonement( Takfir or Apostasy)in determining who’s Muslim & who’s not.

Anyone who calls for reforms is considered infidel

To be honest I’ve been called secular before but never a Shiite

Maybe next time you’ll call me an infidel ;)

Who is in for a debate with you, a person who does not even know what he is talking about?

Your reply is plain "silly", you do not urself know whom to call SALAFI or WAHABI, you just know to use the term loosely everywhere, as many of the others do....

I’m not really interested to get into debate about religious hoopla

there is no papal in Islam

Keys to heaven is not owned by certain scholars. Every Muslim reference is the holy Quran and the Sunnah only. we do not need fatwas from each & every scholar whether Salafist or Wahhabist

By king007• 4 Apr 2010 11:11
king007

You still did not answer.. what do u mean by "SALAFI" in ur understanding, instead you introduced another loosely used term "WAHABI"....care to explain who are eligible to be termed or who can be classified as SALAFI or WAHABI?

"Muhammad ibn Abd-al-Wahhab” defninitely corrected the religious misconceptions of the Arabic peninsula....so all Arabs become "Wahabi" because they supported this correction?

By anonymous• 4 Apr 2010 10:33

if u really interested to do a noble cause, why don't u start a campaign against those qatari's who do nothing, except driving landcruisers all the night, and wasting their time.

Btw, will u plz elaborate, wat is Salafism, they are following shria, or self created theories?

@ genesis,it's upto forward thinking Qataris like yourself to ensure that the salafis don't get a toehold in mate because in the fast advancing world we live in today, this single issue of gender segregation is the primary issue that is going to hold nations back,IRRESPECTIVE of how much money they have,if you want global respect, this whole segregation business has got to go mate,i'm sure you know & accept that fact...

i wish you & your like-minded Qatari colleagues & friends the best of luck in this tussle between the narrow minded & the real minded...good luck mate!

Unfortunately, gender segregation & co-ed is the hot topic now. Not only in Saudi, but in Qatar also. SALAFIS are issuing fatwa after the other scaring people of gender mixing on the workplace & education institutes

Off course this all started , with King abdulla decree that KAUST is a co-ed university. Since then it’s a word war between the salafis & the liberals.

The sad thing, it started to affect locals here. Local internet forums & newspaper Columns are full of anti-gender mixing, posting the thread after the other about the risks of gender mixing with justification that sexual harassment in the workplace & teen pregnancy in western countries are all the result of gender mixing!!!

In addition to the “local favorite conspiracy theory of all time” that gendar mixing is RAND Corporation plot to destroy the Qatari youth!!!
