The Evolution of Religious Belief?

A really interesting article from The Economist about studies into the evolutionary benefits of religious belief. Sorry too long to post in its entirety but have a look; as I say, even if you vehemently disagree, it's very thought provoking.

Here are my thoughts resulting from some of the ideas in the article:

The existence of a deity i.e. what is true, is not needed, it's irrelevant. But then you are faced with the dichotomy that you have to believe it's true for the beneficial effects to work, but to believe you have to prove to yourself it is the truth; thus the result is cognitive dissonance and the negation of the positive aspects.

It's a psychological circular trap. It can be seen quite clearly by those on the outside 9ie never been religious) and by those that have broken out of the bubble.

Thus for those who have been brought up in a religious background it is dangerous to question your religion, but if you must, NEVER question the existence of god.

What do others think?

Damn! You have seen through my Machiavellian and ingeniously evil plot to corrupt all before me, bring down theological belief in Qater, bring down the monarchy and government; all in my quest to legally eat a bacon sandwich in public.

I'll get you next time, grrrrrrrrrr !

Remember I only have to get lucky once! (maniacal laughter)

Adey, i think you spend too much time on religious posts, espcially for someone who isnt religious.. Dont worry about these articles too much, practice what you believe and what makes you happy...
