Discrimination against Filipinos exists!

misty_girl
By misty_girl

Just this morning, I received a call from a British-sounding lady over the telephone and inquiring about our services and looking for my American boss. But, first, she asked me if I speak and understand English. Of course, I said yes, (since I just understood her!)((I am a graduate of one of the best universities in the Philippines and having a post-grad education at that!))

Anyway, the boiling point started when she asked me if I am a Filipino. I said, yes. And she asked if I really understand her for the nth time. SO, I finally asked her, what's that supposed to mean? Then, I said, if you don't want to speak to me, then call some other time since the person you're looking for is in a meeting right now. But if you would be so kind enought to just leave your name and your number, my boss will get back to you as soon as she arrives.

Then, you know what she told me? WHY SHOULD I EVEN BOTHER TO TALK TO YOU!

This is a clear case of discrimination! Is it because I am a Filipino and you think I don't understand you? And you don't want to talk to me because I am a Filipino? C'mon lady, be professional. You don't even want to give me your name. You even lambasted my position and telling me, there's no sense in talking to somebody like me! Grow up! We respect you. We Filipinos are kind and friendly to anybody just as long you give us respect also. Respect begets respect.

It's my first time to encounter such rude action! That's why the impact on me is too high that the BP apparatus rose to its maximum. Kabayan! high blood ako!!!

this always be the word to yield out after a certain nationality issues goes against other nationality...sometimes and most of the times, conversation can go havoc especially when two individuals converse with an irritating moods with them ....lastly, it was always our ego who get hurts...

As long we know that we are a responsible individual, god fearing and loving, no matter what race you're in.., it really doesn't matter....

Sometimes you have to read between the lines to know the real context of a post but others just concentrate on some lines or phrase then make a new topic out of it, instead of the whole topic or article.

and then the battle of wits and sarcasm starts which will turn a thread into another hate thread where everyone tries to outwit and degrade others...

and posting it in here made her felt better...

With all due respect to their hard-work against meagre salary packages, so far I never saw any Filipino/Filipina who speaks with their "Kabayan" in English if any non-Tagalog guy is there !!

I have worked in other GCC nations too before Qatar & found everywhere same very bad habit, specially on phone... if the other side is also of same accent.. they just ask "Kabayaan??" & then they just start talking & do not care if somebody is around them... such conversation may be a headache to other persons... but who cares !!

Professionalism is, irrespective of our nationalities, we should speak in common language which others around us could be able to understand.

You can also see in Questions & Answers section.. & many other sections of QL... Filipinos start their Questions/ads with "KABAYAN Only".... "PINOY Only"...

Regarding insults.. ego problems...specially in the third world Country people... I know one simplest formula in Gulf Countries... If you are really that "Egoist"... then if anybody is misbehaving with you, just give him/her a most befitting reply without giving any value to his/her skin-color.. and always get ready to leave the job...

Otherwise, just shut your mouth.. & keep on earning money to feed your family...'coz there is nothing much in our Countries... we can fulfill all our dreams in a few years here, which is very difficult if we go back home !!

British-sounding lady over the telephone

^^ what do you mean by that? You know British accents?

I don't think so! You do not know the difference between American, Canadian or European accents you racist cow.

Of course, I said yes, (since I just understood her!)((I am a graduate of one of the best universities in the Philippines and having a post-grad education at that!))

^^^ Best University in Philipines and in Education so why are you not working back home and also not working in Education. Liar.

Then, you know what she told me? WHY SHOULD I EVEN BOTHER TO TALK TO YOU!

^^^ She had a complaint idiot and she wanted to talk to the boss not the oily rag, your English is crap, you do not have a degree in anything, you are from a very small village, you are lucky you are not a maid!

Grow up! We respect you. We Filipinos are kind and friendly to anybody just as long you give us respect also. Respect begets respect.

^^^ you grow up, the reason the service industry is so bad over here is because of Pinoys and Indians, you THINK you are great at English and you are crap. You are being used, you are cheap labour, you are NOT GOOD at your jobs, you suck.

You are lazy, ignorant arrogant people who thinks the world owes you a favour. No we dont. Go back home get educated and then come back and most of all stop moaning. If you were educated you would not be here.

Get a grip, Most of you say you have degrees. rofl, so use them, we do. Morons!

You make me laugh so much, do you honestly think there are NO people in the West that are poor and starving? There are plenty! Indians brag about how well they are doing, they sent a rocket to the moon, Heres a hint< go feed your poor! Pinoys go on and on about how poorly they are treated, GO HOME THEN AND STOP BEGGING FOR JOBS FOR YOUR RELATIVES!!!

YOU MAKE ME SICK!

You complain about racism, you lot are the most racist on here.

QL is about guiding people into how we live in Qatar, how can we do that as Westerners is set by Pinoys and Indians who rule the roost, shout racism at every oppurtunity when it SUITS.

If anybody is looking in, Indians and Pinoys rule over White Westerners here, we are stuffed.

There are over 5 million of them over here. They have colonised the place< something they claim to hate,

Also QL, don't come on here if you are looking for help. It is supposed to be a forum helping ex-pats but it is not. It is a chat room for the elite few!

you just have to cope up with it. and being angry is not one of the solutions. in many instances you WILL at some point loose your cool and you WILL loose your professionalism. so next time, when dealing with other nationalities you have to expect this to happen and be ready for it. thats the way of life here. sadly. =(

what a coincidence! i experience once too...

humbleness is what will make all like this worthwhile. hatred burst when your anger overcontrolled it. so just be calm, just drink ample of water and take deep breathe. In handling a teleconversation for a country with mixed nationalities, always expect everything to come at an unexpected. always get yourself ready that in whatever situation it may result, you still carry the charmed of smile. smile like you never heard anything. it won't get less to your personality. so just always be approachable and be friendly. cheer up!!

I agree with what someone mentioned above, Philis are too polite at times. Infact Misty_girl says "we respect you". What the heck is there to respect a stranger? Just becos she sounds as a Brit? Isnt that too much?

Living in various countries, I have found one needs to demand respect to be respected. Misty you should never have replied to such questions about nationality....just ask her the reason for calling and bring her to track.

There are times that people are very sensitive. We might never know that that person had a bad day or PMS. :)

But discrimination, it really happens. If not being sarcastic about it, we will just charge it to experience. Or better to deal it with smile therapy even over the phone. I've been practicing it for 3 years working as customer service and still using it until now. :)

i think its not nationality issue here but thinking negatively, sometimes a caller may ask your nationality to add something like a know a Filipino also working here or I have a lot of Filipino friends but in your case since she ask you if you understand her because she have a british accent she might thinking you don't understand her because of her accent,

On the other hand when you think its of discrimination be courteus, just act professional on the conversation it's like a slap on her face and prove that she is wrong...

very wrong...indeed

but never be rude on the phone... never especially when you are working in a company it will reflects on the whole company...

Starting from the point that you have the right to be treated fairly, you have a few choices about what you can do if you believe you have been discriminated against on the basis of your race say,

you might like to deal with it yourself, by speaking to the person involved, or

you could decide to lodge a complaint about the discrimination with your employer

otherwise, just pray for them, it works!

Admittedly or NOT, we do tend to act/behave differently when it comes to other nationalities.

I know others would (STRONGLY)DISAGREE with me...but I do see and witness some of us (PINOYS) treat others (whatever their nationalities are) especially those who's jobs are considered lower than us.

Like who, some would say?

How about the Nepali security guards or teaboys?

Those Indian drivers (including karwa taxi boys)...
