Australia's World Cup bribe scandal

Former Soccer Australia board member George Negus says payments and gifts to FIFA executives as part of Australia's bid to secure the World Cup are just part of politics.

Explosive allegations have been levelled at Australian football officials claiming they've funnelled nearly $12 million of tax-payer money to two European lobbyists.

The money is set to go to Fedor Radmann, who was investigated for bribery in Germany in 2003, and Peter Hargitay, who's been charged with trafficking cocaine in two countries.

Mr Megus says soccer is a global political phenomenon and people shouldn't just see it as sport.

It's also alleged another $50,000 has been splurged buying pearl necklaces for the wives of FIFA committee members.

Yes, but Dubai has not undergone the scrutiny that comes with hosting something like the world cup or olympics, which puts these issues into the living rooms of billions via TV. Dubai, and Qatar for the matter, attract the interest of certain slice of word society; hosting a major event means the whole pie will be interested.

I agree with your sentiments, but look at Dubai.. It also has very serious human rights issues , yet continues to flourish..

Qatar lacks the climate, space, infrastructure, hotel rooms, and tolerant culture to host the world cup. Australia will get it after a polite few words to Qatar.

In a way I hope Doha's bid is successful, because it will force Qatar to address some serious human rights issues and relax as a culture. Be careful what you wish for Qataris, because hosting the world cup would irreparably change the culture here and place Qatari culture under a level scrutiny you would not like.

well said Alumnar, those 2 reasons alone are why Qatar won't get awarded the WC bid...

Qatar will never be ready... but they sure have plenty of money for briberies! Face it - the weather conditions, expat habits acceptance - just 2 of a huge list of reasons why it is so unlikely to happen in Qatar.

I wonder if they did the same thing to the referee when they slaughtered us in Rugby ?

The problem is that this type of thing is all too common in the World Cup and more so in Olympics. The monies and rewards involve are asronomical...

Ah OK...so we have a justifaction for Australia to be corrupt...quite valid also!!!!! So, since they could host some events they get the right to be corrupt...very logical...appreciated.

the only difference here Scotiabank is that Australia is actually capable of hosting a WC....they had the 2000 Olympics then the 2003 Rugby WC....
