The Arabs in Portugal

Platao36
By Platao36

I'm making this post to show some ileterate people that Portugal inhabitants also have arabic influence/blood just like we have from a lot of other nations, some of them already gone like the Romans or Fenicians. This is just a small part of the full article, don't want people to get too tired reading this.

"n Spain, most of the country's inhabitants and a good number of its visitors are at least passingly, familiar with its Arab heritage. But it is less well known that Portugal, too, was at one time part of al-Andalus the land known in the West as Moorish Spain. Cordoba was the capital of al-Andalus its counterpart in southern Portugal was Silves,

The market in Loule Algarve, shows Arab influences in its arches and dome.

"A good number of our people, especially educated people, know quite well that the Arabs were part of our history," says Jose Antonio Preto d a Silva, a former Portuguese tourism commissioner in Canada. "They contributed to our language, our architecture and especially to our knowledge of navigation. The lateen sail and the astrolabe, introduced by the Arabs, were instrumental in launching our nation into its Age of Discovery.
Alfama bustling beneath its hilltop Arab castle, is today a testimony to the Arabs' brilliant legacy of convivencia peaceful cohabitation of learning, innovation and culture that shaped the European Renaissance. Though it was founded by the Phoenicians and later embellished by Romans and Visigoths, the Arabs gave it its name, which comes from al-hammah "hot spring." Amid narrow, cobbled streets that follow the Arab platting, and among the complexity of close‑quartered whitewashed houses, the aura of the long gone Muslim city still lingers. Climbing plants and stone vases still sprout flowers in courtyards, and all appear to have more in common with North Africa than Europe."

Interestingly the Portuguese also have the genetic markers for black africans as well. It seems the slave that were brought to Portugal 100s of years ago were eventually integrated into portuguese society.

Arabic invaders where welcome by the local Iberian population, in the beginning of the invasion, since they had no freedom under the Visigoths rules.

They had even military Jewish support latter on, against christian kingdoms.

I study Portuguese History in Portugal " Invasao Arabe e a Reconquista Crista" and I never read the Islam was imposed by the Moors, the Caliphate treated non-Muslims differently at different time, but the 48 Christians of Córdoba decapitated for religious offences against Islam. "Os Martires de Cordoba", and other documented cases did big damage in the Islam against Christianism.

When al-Hakam III die in 976, and the situation worsened for non-Muslims in general.

The first major persecution occurred on December 30, 1066 when the Jews were expelled from Granada and fifteen hundred families were killed when they did not leave.

But can we say that this was forcing violently the Islam rules in Peninsula Iberica?

These deaths played out, not in a single spasm of religious unrest, but over an extended period of time; dissenters were fully aware of the fates of their predecessors and chose to protest against Islamic rule.

Medieval Spain and Portugal was the scene of almost constant warfare between Muslims and Christians. Periodic raiding expeditions were sent from Al-Andalus to ravage the Christian Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms, bringing back booty and slaves. In raid against Lisbon in 1189, for example, the Almohad caliph Yaqub al-Mansur took 3,000 female and child captives, while his governor of Córdoba, in a subsequent attack upon Silves in 1191, took 3,000 Christian slaves

Only armies can take this quantity of slaves don't you think?

So honestly I still don't understand what you are trying to say.

No Arab Invasion, no Arab army, no Islam conflicts against local religions, no centurys of warfare between Portuguese, and Mouros ?

But in the end the Arab culture had a very important impact in Portugal, bringing development and a very rich cultural legacy .

Actually we still have Moors in Portugal, they are almost 6 millions, they love red colors, they are loosers and belong to Sport Lisboa e Benfica.

Further translation...

+++++++++++++++++++++++

In year 587 AD, the king Recared becomes allies with trinitarians for political reasons and, in his name and his people name abjured of arrianism that was the religion of the past godo kings. Arriano was forbidden and there were brutal baitings against Arriano's followers and agains jews (that until that moment were religious free). The arrians from Peninsula and South France stir up to revolt, but they were defeated and they had to bear with robbery, violations, murders and slavery from godo oligarchy and even the clergy.

King Vitize arrives in 702 AD and made an amnisty on arrianist and gave back their possesions; stopped represion against jews and called for the XVIII ecclesiastical council in Toledo (which papers are suspiciously lost) - most of the researchers think that they were destroyed because they were against Orthodox Roman Christianism.

In 709 AD Vitiza dies. Nobiliary noblemen and bishops block the way to Vitiza's son: Achila and they take Don Rodrigo, military head related to trinitarian interests.

A civil war started between Don Rodrigo's followers - Orthodox Roman Church believers - and Vitiza's ideas supporters - mostly arrians that looked at Rodrigo as an usurper of the Goth Throne.

Rechesindo was in charge of Betica (south iberia). He was the tutor of Achila and was killed by Rodrigo in a fight.

Then, the Achila's supporters called for help from Taric - in charge of the goth province of Tingitana (Tangiers) - North Marrocco. Taric was probably goth as it can be got from the "ic" letters meaning ´son´ in germanic.

Taric crossed Gibraltar with warriors of different ethnos, all them integrated in unitarian ideas (arrians), with a lot of berbers. These troops were accepted by the iberians with no problem as they were used to see foreign troops between them when noblemen ask for help to different "friends" for the internal fights between the goths. The jews welcomed the foreigners as they were supporters against the trinitarians that were baiting them.

According to the experts, only one nation can manage a militar invasion, and that time there was not any arab imperium but tribes and little chiefs frequently fighting between them and without a common government, administration or army.

According to researcher Ignacio Olague "in the latin and berber cronicles, the goth appear as a group fighting against an enemy that was not spaniard, neither cristian, neither heretical, but anonymous: sarracen" - The fact that is not the cronicles or it was omitted by the writers is that goths were fighting against the mass of the folks, that were against the goth oligarchy and the bishops.

I found the place where I read. It is in spanish, sorry, but I would try to translate at least the beginning.

http://www.webislam.com/?idt=2893

Im not telling this true or not, it is just another point of view. As I started my first post: "One time, I heard that ..."

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Some profesors are arguing against the official version, that says that Islam was forced violently in iberian peninsula, after arab invasion in 711. They say tat Islam was not forced and was not extrange for hispanians that took it massively and free.

In their opinion, the muslim forcement was not that. It was an invention from Christian Church in order to cover their defeat against the unitarian christians, followers of arraniasm preached by Prisciliano.

Was history like it was told to us? Is it possible that in VII century a muslim army could cross Gibraltar defeat visigoths armies and bring under most of the iberian peninsula? a gang of berbers could maintain 20 millions of hispaniards during some centuries? Against this we have the fact that there is no document from those days with reference to the terrible invasion, that if true if shld be for peninsulars all the imaginable bad things. The first news dont appear until the latin and muslims cronicals from XI centuries, six generations, 150 years after the facts, when Islam was strongly rooted in Peninsula.

Some researchers, after check that muslims claim for impossible victories and that cristians omited any detail about what was happening, conclude that mith has survived because it was worthy to maintain. Between muslims, because it glorified them, between the cristians because it covered a social and religious defeat from the eyes of his own people.

The civil war that was in Iberian Peninsula at the beginning of VIII century, described as a political conflict and dress up later as an invasion from outsiders, had his origin four centuries before, in the controversial between two cristians ideas: the unitarians (arrians), that said that Son was not equal to Father, meaning that Jesus was not God; and the trinitarians, coming from the ideas of San Pablo that maintained that three different figures: Son, Father and Saint Spirit was one True God.

(...)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Apologize my "free" translation - my english is not so good.

Article is long and long... but basically it says that in Iberia we had two different religious armies before the muslims came: the arrians believers of only one God, being Jesus only one prophet, and trinitarians believers of the Saint Trinity.

So, making a simplification you can imagine the muslims arriving to any fortified visigoth city...

Muslim on his horse in front of the door - "Eh! Open the door!!! We are tired, hungry and dirty!!!"

Suspicious visigoth - "Before open the door... How many gods are and who is Jesus??????"

Muslim - "mmmm... well... there is only one God, Allah and Jesus is one of His prophets..."

Visigoth - "Allah? Well, we called Him here Father, but its the same! Ey! Open the doors! These people are friends and real believers..."

What you mean with real Arabs?

The Iberian Peninsula was invaded in 711 by Arabic and Arabized-Berber descent, ruled by the Califa of Damascus.

20 million in 711 is almost a joke.

Nothing says that conversions where forced, but more assimilated by populations in disbelieve of old Visigoth religion.

One time, I heard that in fact the iberian peninsula was not "exactly" invaded by the arabs.

They said that only around 300.000 / 400.000 arabs entered in iberian peninsula and there is no chance that they could rule over a population of 20 million iberians.

They said that fact was that islam was accepted by most of the population and that's how they avoid most of the blood.

"Besides the fields, the tiles, the kitchens, the Arab architecture of castles, gates and city walls and the audibly Arabic names of towns and geographical features, there is the less definable but very persuasive Arab look and feel of Portugal's landscape, especially in Algarve, to remind the visitor of this important part of the country's history. The sparkling white houses with red terracotta roofs, set in lush orchards, the courtyard patios drowsing in their flowery shade, and the fretted chimneys unique to Southern Portugal all these are evidence of a kind."

"After 1249, although their western Iberian kingdoms were no more, Arabs continued to live in the Christian ruled kingdoms, working the land, constructing and decorating homes, villas and palaces. The 1492 expulsion of Muslims from Spain led to a similar expulsion from Portugal in 1497, but even after this, the cultural legacy lived on. The early 16th century court of Manuel I, for example, the ruler who patronized the first Portuguese voyages to India around the Horn of Africa, featured Arab clothing, Arab dances and music, and Arab style harnesses for horses."

Almost forgot this important part of the same article.

"In the mid 13th century, Afonso III conquered Faro, the last stronghold of the Arabs, the city that is today the capital of Algarve, the southernmost province of the country. With its fall, five centuries of Arab rule in Portugal ended. (In what would become Spain, it would be 240 years more before the last Arab kingdom was extinguished in 1492.) But the Arab legacy enriched and shaped Portugal indelibly.

The Arab introduction of new agricultural technology, and the Arabs' plain hard work, made Arab Portugal prosper. To this day, the common Portuguese verb mourejar means "to work like a Moor," and it implies unusual diligence and tenacity. The Arabs introduced and expanded groves and fields, some of which dated from Roman times, of almonds, apricots, carobs, figs, lemons, olives, oranges, pomegranates, rice, palms, sugar, spices and numerous vegetables. Today, many of the orchard and garden products that grace the tables of Portugal carry modified Arabic names. "
