Don Masri
By Don Masri

I think that this is a topic that should be taken into consideration. I would appreciate any comments, as I assume others would as well.

Hey Kaizer,

Have you heard of a company called "The First Investor"?

How much $$$ should I expect, holding a Canadian MBA and 3 yrs experience, for a Portfolio Manager position?

Thanks,

Bill.

thank you. The info the you have submitted where very helpfull and gave me good perspective!

Don Masri

well i am not looking for a furnished flat.

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 13:36
Kaizer Soze

For a decent 2 bedroom apartment fully furnished in a decent area you are looking at QR 9,000 per month. Villas, forget it - 3 bedroom starting from 12k, all the way up.......

By Don Masri• 15 Apr 2007 13:34
Don Masri

flats or villas..

By Don Masri• 15 Apr 2007 13:33
Don Masri

so what are the property price ranges for a decent area and reasonable place?

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 13:05
Kaizer Soze

Hance my dilemma. I need to be relatively close to Aby Hamour for schoolign so cannot take up residence north of West Bay. if I buy for investment its a bit tight as i still have to keep up rent on my villa. hence my desire for something reasonable to appear for sale to expats a bit more centrally located....

By Templar• 15 Apr 2007 12:58
Templar

Yea, buying here (if you can) would be a good investment for the short term at least. Pay off a morgage rather than rent, and sell after 5-6 years at what should be a very healthy profit!

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:56
Kaizer Soze

So no financial pressure on you in the interim....and you have probably already got Qr100-200k profit in it.

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:55
Kaizer Soze

That would be great if that was the case since I think many of us would prefer to buy, given the opportunity. My biggest headache is the kids schooling which means that the daily commute for my darling wife and kids would be completely untenable from that side of town. hence my potential interest in AL Waab City!

insh'Allah. But the good news is that no payments are due until completion. The place I bought is not in The Pearl it is in the crooked towers Lagoon development just before the Pearl. Cost was QR1.4million

I think you will be surprised Kaizer. There will be more changes to the rules in the coming months, and more projects completed before the 2-3 year mark. I'll check with our guys here and post on upcoming projects

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:46
Kaizer Soze

rent money is dead money so better to buy where possible.

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:44
Kaizer Soze

Its not good for me - unfortunately I need a minimum of three beds for the family and school is right over the other side of Doha so the Pearl doesn't work for me. Anything else won't be online for at least another 2 or 3 years. I quite like the idea of the Al Waab city project - very well located

Yea good move richard....thinking about it myself once i have settled a bit more

I have just bought a place. Figured there was an opportunity to make money and it is no more expensive than rent.

You can be sure that there will be other options for expats to buy soon. Yep the pearl is hellishly over-priced, but there are other developments planned

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:32
Kaizer Soze

this will remain to be the case

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:31

Don Masri

well, would you prefer on buying property rather than renting?

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:27
Kaizer Soze

Yes, the future is bright for the wealth management industry here in Qatar!

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:24
Kaizer Soze

Once your accomodation cots exceed 30% of your income then it becomes questionable as to whether its economically viable to remain. That said - Don should factor in a nice tax free bonus to mitigate some of the cost.

By Tigasin321• 15 Apr 2007 12:22
Tigasin321

here is good. If you are prepared to take a risk and get rewarded for bringing in good business, I think it is worth it. It does take time here though to get deals. Much longer than most other places.

It out of all proportion!! Quality of life here is good but my god you pay tax through your rent. Don't see it easing any time soon either.

By Tigasin321• 15 Apr 2007 12:20

I thought the package was okay until I got here. All the housing rental information I was given was way out of date. Have been here a year and find that housing costs have really reduced net income to a point where the whole economics are questionable. My housing costs are one third of my monthly salary.

Well as far as accomodation in involved, i am looking for a two bedroom flat, unfurnished. I know that I did not get an excellent offer, however, it is a start. I believe that the biggest risk in life is not taking one in the first place... would you agree?

By Templar• 15 Apr 2007 12:17

PLEASE bear in mind the bloody rental prices out here at the moment before you move. I just got here and ended up paying a god damn fortune for a villa last week.....

I know they have been looking to bolster their Private Banking team recently

I agree with Richard - although no quarterly bonus if you are getting the annual one - it should be one or t'other.

With your qualifications as a wealth manager you should be getting a total package of approx QR20 plus bonus of at least 6 month salary and a quraterly bonus.

well I know for a fact that the future prospects are all dependant on performance. and there are hefty bonuses involved as well ranging from 2-6 months pay on gross salary in average.

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:13
Kaizer Soze

I would suggest it is not worth your while coming out for less than 25k per month. It makes a big difference though whether you are coming out on single or family status. Also bear in mind bonus potential - most banks here will pay up to 6 months salary for excellent performance.

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:11
Kaizer Soze

You do only have three years experience - so I guess relatively junior. You should push for a little more though. I know people working at a similar level for Qr22k all in per month.

By Templar• 15 Apr 2007 12:09

did they include housing allowance don?

By Templar• 15 Apr 2007 12:08

and are the only 2 decent foreign banks out here! (well citi too i guess)

By Don Masri• 15 Apr 2007 12:08

so its 20k ++? because the offer I got was 17k, Annual tickets, Medical, subsidized car and furniture loans.

Kaizer Soze

For a regular RM I would think 25 to 30k per month all in.

By Kaizer Soze• 15 Apr 2007 12:05
Kaizer Soze

is the offer? I assume you are talking about either HSBC or Standard Chartered, both of which pay reasonably well.

By Templar• 15 Apr 2007 12:03
Templar

ok so a salary of approx 20k per month, with housing allowance, car allowance etc would not be unreasonable for a RM position

Well I was offered a position of Relationship Manager in Wealth management division. I hold an MA and 3+ years exp. in banking and finance. The offer was from one of the foriegn banks in Qatar. Also I am certified in Project management, 6-Sigma BB...etc

Have to agree with Richard, the Mrs works for an internation bank as head of financial institutions, and is on a pretty good package. Your prospective bank and position woud help us to give you a better estimate

by the finance sector. I work in the area of investment banking and asset management. Here the salaries vary enormously depending on role/experience etc

Tell me the designation and salary and I will let you know what I think. I am quite familiar with the finance industry here. Like any other job it depends on how senior the position is as to how good the numbers appear. Also which bank, as the reputation varies hugely between them......

By Don Masri• 15 Apr 2007 11:50
Don Masri

Well I work in Palestine at the moment with the regulatory authority there. I have been offered a job offer at a Bank in Doha. However, I am not familiar with the industry standard in Qatar.

Unlike the previous posters I agree with you that this is a valid and growing part of the private sector and would be useful to know what slaries are being paid for newcomers. Where do you work Don and what is your designation?
