Frustrated!!

Hi All,

I'm certain there are many people in the same boat, but it seems you need to perform a minor miracle to secure employment in Qatar, particularly if you're a westerner. What's most frustrating is when so called 'reputable' agencies call you, tell you how great you are, and you never hear from them again.
I've been trying for 10 months. Admittedly I had no idea it would be this hard - or is it?
It seems that most are being recruited from the sub-continent. I understand the logic behind this, but someone with 20 years senior IT experience, business acumen, people management, would be looked upon quite favorably?
Very determined, so not giving up! I would love to know people's thought's, particularly people in a similar situation as me, and any westerners presently working in Qatar.

Best wishes.

There are so many factors here once you are looking for job here...

1. Almost all market are dominated by Indians or Philippine (IT too). I feel that Qatar will become another Bombay or Manila in few years.

2. Indians favors Indian...they are very much biased (even south Indian will not take north Indian- so imagine how biased they are.. but of course if it comes to other nationalities they will prefer Indians). It happened in Malaysia-when Indian got chance to work in Malaysia in IT sector-they start favoring Indians... once government come to know, they stop taking Indians... even Indians they are claiming they are TOP in IT in the world.

3. There is no any hiring rules... no any qualification checks, skills and experience check, no any rules from government...

4. Indians and other sub-continents are willing to work cheap due to problem in their own countries and their living conditions back in homes.

5. Qatari are becoming cleaver they are looking for cheap labour... basically SLAVES.... Asian works like Donkey and don't demand and if they demand also cannot do any harm to Qatari or Qatar government because of their weakness and lack of support from their own government.

6. Everything depend on PASSPORT here.. no one cares about qualifications, job experience... or another issues.

7. Influence play major role for getting job here... no interview, test or anything....if you have influence/reference it will work better that your qualifications or skills...

8. At last.... LUCK.....

LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

So please try- don't Give Up!!! No one knows.. when is your turn... because of your LUCK!!!

Thank You all, your comments are most appreciated.

I'm a little disturbed about the 'fake western experience' comment posted earlier. Reading peoples comments, surely highlights the need of westerners. Indians are also swarming into Australia as well. They either own a 7 Eleven store or drive cabs. The select few who are professionals, have exceptional language skills. I owned a business and quite regularly used to get Indian people seeking employment. Presentation was always excellent, none however were ever offered a job, because there was always one vital skill lacking - language.

There is a problem with the mentalities and need for a better infrastructure in Qatar. A westerner can organize Qatar and make it much more user friendly but unfortunately due to money they hire the unorganised, stingy and useless. Phillipinos have a much better work ethic then indians in my opinion. However they both destroy the english language and lack cultural understanding of the different personalities in Qatar.

A place where, in my humble opinion, Qataris and Westerners do exceedingly well at trying to understand each other and help the nation progress.

The problem is not your nationality or indianization(but I do admit mostly indians always crap the market by getting low salaries) anyway the problem is the retarted qatari mentality to award a person salary on there passport and not experience.

I am sure if bedouien retarted mentatlity wont be like this then you would be getting a good job offers.

By the way why Qatar, IT is crap here man. If you like support and all then maybe but generally if you should be moving weat rather east if you like yourself to be grown professionally. If you want to waste your profession then welcome to qatar. Did you try Dubai maybe there situation can be better.

Western experience is fake? lol ...very funny, western man wont have 5 pages CV! just a page explaines everything but look at other nationalitys CV 3,4 to 5 pages all untrue statements about their qualification and experience! even if they worked during school vacation when they were 12yrs old they will mention in their CV LOL

I dont live with example..Reather I prefer to be an example!

i have an experience with recruitment, western poeople are demanding and most of them dont show satisfaction. 90% of them want to be in mangerial position, so, as result, i source different nationality and get more experince, willing to work, not demanding, and in the half price and sometimes less. to me western experience is fake.

also, most of the companies now, looking for qualifications no matters what nationality u r.

The salary bracket for a given position in a company is the key. Their are however quite a few outfits that will pay higher salaries. You should focus on Qatar Foundation, the oil and gas sector and international firms.

Lots of companies do have a website with an employment link. Try the direct method if the agency is failing to come back with a bite.

message if you need any further help.

Somehow there is a India domination here, don't forget they are coming as a new world power.

The indians I work with are very professional, and some of them show a outstanding performance in work.

But there's always the stigma, and the difference of mentalitys

they are not good as westerners no way! just their politics ..they are liers and know to trick people to let them recruited and apart from that is they are many in Qatar and in many companies is indian management so they bring their uncle, cousins and so. in Qatar Airways some indians are hotel management but they have a big post in high departments. im working in goverment and we do have few indians but their politics its like we have 1000 indians!

though indian take a lesser salary, they do the job as good as any westerner.. ( i mean most of the Indians )

a westerner will always ask for a salary of 6000 USD... and Indian may come for 2000 USD

of course , there are positions like .... 5-star Hotel GM, Golf Club GM, etc etc....a.Posh secretary in a Real Estate company...LOL.... where Indians cannot do a good job. Those jobs are better to be done by a westerner

what about other jobs ??.....Indians are as good as westerner.

Qatarization is not so much coz qataris will not accept small salary but indianization is going on in Qatar a lot! beliave me I have family in oman who came here for work, some also qataries but its very hard to find a job can you beliave? they call and tell them how good they are and end of the day we find out they recruit an indian, when i was looking for a job , i was called for interview in many oil companies the boss is indian after interview he would say ohhh thats nice you are great and right person we need u also have arabic language! but after that i dont hear from them any more, after sometime i came to find out they recruit an indian! one time i received a call from QP for interview when i went I met an indian female who said sorry we postpone and will call u again i didnt hear them again...

try to get indian passport and shake ur head and accept 2000 riyals salary u will find a job

I believe that part of the problem is your IT qualifications. The sub-continent is known for its expertise in this area. Another issue may be these "agencies." It is hard to deal with a middle-man without knowing them. The only real suggestion I have is applying directly to the six American universities in Qatar. They all post their job openings on their websites. They will deal fairly with you.

your work experience is not the problem and although very in demand, your competitor (not necessarily from sub-continent) are many and presumably will take a much lesser salary and other benefits accorded to or demanded by "westerners"

You can hire a semi-western(sub-continent) with the same experience for less. Here they pay per nationality not necessarily per work experience. For example, you can hire a South African(same experience) for far less than a Australian.
