English Teacher in Doha?
By AnotherAsma •
Hello/salam all,
(and Ramadan Kareem to fellow Muslims)
I am a British citizen and just graduated with a degree in History. I am considering doing a CELTA course to be able to teach English in Qatar for a year.
I was at first very excited about doing this, but I just read many posts on some forums advising against moving to Qatar, as apparently employers are not very honest (and therefore,I might find myself taking up loans to survive).
How true is this? If it is really that bad, what other Gulf country would you recommend?
Thanks a lot! :)
With no experience and barely having the ink dry on a CELTA - you don't qualify for the more reliable employers that pay benefits and salary in full and on time and provide sponsorship (which you WILL need).
No place in the GCC is going to take you on except perhaps those employers who abuse desperate, inexperienced, barely got a teaching cert credential.
This is an expensive place to live. Take a look at the various schools etc here and what minimum qualifications and experience they require before making any firm plans.
Can you still apply? Sure, but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a reasonable/decent offer from a dependable employer.
Ramadaan Greetings to you & welcome on QL !!
I hurriedly answered because we need to portray correct image of whatever concerns us.
Regards,
Can't say on the intricacies of a employment visa for a single muslim woman.
On the brighter side, If you are qualified & selected by a 'good' company / institute ...
It will be nice to work & stay in Qatar. [ There are many from UK ].
I pray you earn enough to help others around you and an occasional dinner for me [ smiles ].
What ups & down ? It is part of the life for all of us.
You already have the advantage of carrying a British PP.
thanks for your reply.
Please tell me what you personally think are the ups and downs of living and working in Qatar.
Btw, is it safe for a woman to come and live there on her own or do I need to come with a mahram?
All false feedback...
