Shura Council recommends extending government economic packages

The Shura Council yesterday recommended continuing the government economic packages program for the private sector in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact.

At its regular meeting Monday, chaired by His Excellency the Deputy Speaker Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Sulaiti, via video conferencing, the council reviewed the report of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee on the current situation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) benefitting from the government’s economic incentives program during the pandemic.

In March 2020, among several noteworthy initiatives introduced by Qatar to ease the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a support package of financial and economic incentives worth QR 75 billion had been developed for the private sector following the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

At the start of the Shura Council session yesterday, the members lauded HH the Amir’s continuous support for the private sector through these economic packages.

The first package launched in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 situation, played a significant role in diminishing the effects of the pandemic on the private sector. This was in addition to certain rent and payment exemptions that companies were able to benefit from for six months.

With the pandemic lasting for a longer period and the economic impact to continue, the Council recommended continuing the financial incentives for the SMEs to help them deal with the situation.

The Council also called for encouraging government and semi-government agencies and banks to launch initiatives for the private sector during the pandemic period.

The Council highlighted that this can be done specifically by easing procedures for obtaining the benefits of the approved subsidy from economic packages directly, expanding the circle of beneficiaries of the economic packages and government support to include various economic activities such as productive farms and similar economic sectors, finding an appropriate mechanism to support the committee tasked with evaluating and tackling obstacles facing the private sector at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and urging the ministry to accelerate the implementation of support programs.
