Second edition of Truffle Exhibition and Auction opens at Souq Waqif
The second edition of the Souq Waqif Truffle Exhibition and Auction kicked off on Thursday morning at the Souq Waqif’s Eastern Square.
White and brown truffles, from Algeria and Saudi Arabia, were showcased on the opening day. The rare and much sought-after culinary delicacy had a lot of admirers on the exhibition’s opening day.
The event, in partnership with Qatar’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Municipality, is expected to run for at least four months. The exhibition will be open daily between 8am and 12pm, or until stocks run out for the day.
Jamal Ibrahim Al Ishaq, the Exhibition and Auction Manager at Souq Waqif, said 150 boxes of truffles had arrived from Saudi Arabia and Algeria for the launch. He said they were expecting more shipments from Iraq, Syria, and Iran in the coming days.
“In the next two weeks, we expect an additional 500 to 600 boxes, primarily from Iraq. While local truffles might be auctioned, the limited rainfall in recent months means Qatari production will likely be low this season,” Al Ishaq was quoted as saying by The Peninsula.
Truffles, a type of underground fungus that grows in desert sands during the rainy season, are highly coveted for their distinct taste and rarity.
Prices for truffles vary by type, size, and delivery volume. White truffles (Zubaidi) are currently priced between QAR600 and QAR1,200 per kilogram, while the brown Ikhlasi variety starts at QAR150 per kilogram.
The prices are anticipated to fall as supply increases in the coming months. A Ministry of Municipality representative will inspect the produce daily to ensure the truffles’ quality.
Fagga, an essential part of Gulf cuisine, is especially popular in Qatar, where it is incorporated into various traditional dishes, including Majboos.
