HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani took part in the GCC-US Summit in Riyadh where US President Barack Obama said Washington will deter and confront aggression against the Gulf states, which continue to have concerns about threats from Iran.

The Emir hailed the success and the positive outcomes of the summit, also attended by the other GCC leaders, at Diriyah Palace in Riyadh.

“I reaffirmed the policy of the United States to use all elements of our power to secure our core interests in the Gulf region and to deter and confront external aggression against our allies and our partners,” news agencies quoted Obama as saying, after the meeting.

“Even with the nuclear deal we recognise collectively that we continue to have serious concerns about Iranian behaviour,” he added.

Admitting the differences with Gulf states, Obama said, “What’s true between the United States and the GCC, as is true with all of our allies and friends is that at any point of time there’re going to be differences.”

He said the US and its Gulf allies were united in the war against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) extremist militia.

“We remain united in our fight to destroy ISIL or Daesh which is a threat to all of us,” Obama told reporters, after the meeting.

He said the GCC countries pledged to increase their contributions to battling ISIL, which controls large territories in Syria and the neighbouring Iraq.

The summit also discussed the conflicts in Syria, Yemen, Libya and Iraq.

The Emir, along with the leaders of the other GCC states and Obama, also attended the closing session of the summit. The Emir attended a working luncheon hosted by King Salman for the GCC leaders and Obama.

Ahead of the summit, the Emir met Obama had discussed regional and international issues, including international efforts to combat terrorism, cooperation between Qatar and the US and prospects for advancing them in all fields.

They also stressed the importance of continuing and strengthening international efforts to combat these phenomena and scourges.

Mufti: Both Cameron and Obama are paying the price for Bush's antics. The public does not want to lose any more of its servicemen.

In Syria, there was also the added issue of Russian presence.

The US is still active via the air and covert operations along with "advisors" helping local malitias....

No not at all- Republicans and some senior members of his administration were for active participation in Syria. He resisted them.

Mufti: He couldn't send boots on the ground because the American public would have kicked up a storm.

As for the South China Seas, I would call it meddling rather than strategic..

Brit: Well he inherited Afghanistan and Iraq wars from his predecessor. There is certainly American involvement in Syria and Libya but he refused to go for a full-fledged war, which I believe was a good thing. He saved billions of dollars and thousands of American lives.

Deployment of 7th Fleet flagship is a strategic move. It will not turn into a war but will act as deterrent. American has deep interests in South China sea.

brit, that could also have been pointing at North Korea.

Mufti: Obama's forces in one guise or another are still involved in Syria, Iraq, Libya and afghanistan.. He also ratcheted up the tension with China, by deploying the 7th Fleet flagship and strike group to the south China seas..

The best thing about Obama has been that he didn't push his country into another war. Even though some of America's so-called allies tried their best to have another America-led war but they failed.

We only allow like minded people to participate - don't want anyone spreading the rumour that the earth is round or that the moon landings were real
