US President Trump promises to maintain good relations with Qatar
US President Donald Trump has said that he was confident of maintaining good relations with Qatar and has also ruled out moving the US airbase away from the country despite the political and economic blockade it is facing by the Saudi-led group, reported Al Jazeera.
Four countries, including Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE had imposed an illegal land, sea and air blockade on Qatar on June 5.
Qatar houses the Al Udeid airbase, which holds the forward headquarters of Central Command and hosts around 10,000 American troops
Trump, although he had earlier said there are ’10 countries willing to build us another base,’ added that “we’ll not have a problem with the military base.”
“We are going to have a good relationship with Qatar and not going to have a problem with the military base,” Trump said in an interview with CBN News aired on Wednesday.
“If we ever had to leave, we’d have 10 countries willing to build us another one. And they’ll pay for it. The days of us paying for things are largely over,” he said in the interview.
When the Gulf crisis broke, Trump had immediately taken credit for it in a series of Tweets. He had said his trip to the Middle East was ‘already paying off.’
Last month, Qatar signed a $12bn deal with the US to purchase F-15 fighter jets from the country.
Top diplomats from the US and United Kingdom have been in Qatar recently to try and end the crisis that threatens to destabilise the region.
During Tillerson's visit to Doha, Qatar and the US also signed a landmark agreement to help combat terrorism financing.
