Tram system at Education City to be operational by Sept 2016
Qatar’s first and the Middle East’s most energy-efficient tram system to make the Education City a car-free place will be operational by September 2016, according to a senior official.
A trial run of the service to transport students, staff and visitors within the Education City will begin in early 2016 and give a glimpse of what the future holds for public transport in Qatar.
“This is a project to reduce traffic, minimise usage of cars and emission, it will be completed in September 2016 before that there will be trial runs in the beginning of 2016,” said Engineer Saad Al Muhannadi, President of Qatar Foundation.
Avenio trams low-floor technology and ergonomic design offers passengers a high level of comfort.
Siemens will supply 19 trams, each with three cars and able to accommodate up to a maximum of 239 passengers.
The Avenio trams will run on 11.5km of track without overhead contact lines. The system will be installed across the Education City campus and will serve 25 stations and stops.
The life-size model of the Avenio tram will be displayed at a number of different locations throughout Doha, giving public the opportunity to see what the trams will look like and to experience the tram first hand.
