Qatar’s Criminal Investigations Dept detain 67 people for begging during Ramadan

The Holy month of Ramadan is a time when people tend to be pious and more generous to fellow human beings.
However, some people also consider Ramadan as an ideal time to take advantage of people’s large heartedness by creating false stories and resorting to begging. Since begging is illegal in the country, Qatar’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) takes a very serious view about it.
Yesterday, CID officials revealed that they had detained 67 people during the first 10 days of Ramadan, according to Gulf Times.
The CID’s Anti-Begging section has been taking an aggressive stance against the public menace during the Holy month. The Ministry of Interior has prepared a masterplan to fight the rampant problem of begging during Ramadan, reported The Peninsula.
It had also requested people to report cases of begging and give charity only through charity organisations.
Charity organisations are much better equipped to distribute charity properly because of their continuous study of the people in distress and need. Police patrols have been roaming around the country 24 hours a day to nab beggars.
Officials have urged residents to alert the anti-begging section on telephone numbers 2347444 or 33618627.
