Qatar promises to invest $10bn in developing infrastructure in USA
Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohamed bin Saud Al Thani, Chief Executive of the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA), told US officials that it will invest $10bn in infrastructure projects inside the USA, reported Business Insider.
The move is widely seen as a huge boost to the economic plans of President-elect Donald Trump.
Sheikh Abdullah delivered the promise while speaking to officials including Charles Rivkin, US assistant secretary of state for economic and business affairs, in Doha.
QIA had earlier said it intended to invest $35bn in unspecified projects in the US from 2016 to 2021, and it was not immediately clear if this amount was a part of that plan.
US infrastructure development is one of Donald Trump’s main plans of action. In a presidential debate, he had contrasted the gleaming airports of Qatar and Dubai with more shabby US facilities such as LaGuardia and Newark.
Qatar’s investment is expected to help cement ties with the Trump administration at a time of uncertainty in the Gulf.
