Qatar plans to launch a wind turbine to produce electricity
Qatar has completed a study to set up a wind turbine with a capacity to produce seven megawatt (MW) of electricity in the northern part of the country, said a senior official from utility distributor, Kahramaa.
“A plot of land has already been earmarked for the project in the northern areas of the country,” said Abdul Aziz Ahmed Al Hammadi, Head of the Tarsheed, the national electricity and water conservation programme of Kahramaa.
The wind turbine project will be the first of its kind in a GCC country, Al Hammadi told Al Sharq on the sidelines of a meeting of a working team of renewable energy held at the headquarters of Arab League in Cairo.
“We have also planned to build the highest wind turbine in the world with a height of 135 meters,” said Al Hammadi.
He further added, “Renewable energy will be our top priority in future. Several studies have been conducted to launch solar power plants in the country. Three solar power plant projects are already in the pipeline. Work on one of them will begin next year.” [The Peninsula]
There was a lady member on QL few years back Santro she suggested quite 8-9 or 10 points to Qatar government. It was one of them too.I saw several of her suggestions took place since 3-4 years. She was the first to post about requirement of new port for cruise ships, a bigger museam, a bigger library, solar power, wind power projects. My husband was telling me this morning too that all of ger suggestions were adopted honestly.
Some people really write good posts and lot many high authorities take them seriously too.
Qatar living rocks!
I suggest Solar panels + Turbines + Waste Management recycling etc, will make Qatar the best Eco-friendly Country in the World.. =))
adil: You may be correct. From what I've read, the cost of concrete and related materials to build the base to support the structure and then the wear and tear / servicing on moving parts including the gearings / bearings makes them less cost effective...
However, I could be wrong. Anyway.... Its good initiative
Actually wind turbines are actually quite efficient and have numerous advantages over solar; for instance wind turbines are much more cost effective especially in regions near the sea. their disadvantages such as moving parts, or noise or space needed for wind farms can be easily made up in places like qatar which include desert and lots of empty spaces.
The clue could be in this statement - "We have also planned to build the highest wind turbine in the world with a height of 135 meters,” said Al Hammadi.
wouldn't solar panels make more sense in Qatar?
Good idea. However, many believe that Wind Turbines are not as efficient and cost effective as Solar
