Qatar to participate in Earth Hour tonight
Qatar has taken some great steps in protecting the environment and ensuring sustainable development.
Reiterating its role in environment preservation, the country will tonight join the rest of the world to mark the Earth Hour from 8.30 to 9.30 pm.
Earth Hour, which is a global movement aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues encourages individuals, communities, corporates, and households to turn off their lights to show support for and fight against climate change.

The event, commemorated on the last Saturday of March every year, sees millions of people across the globe switch off the lights of their premises for one hour, indicating their commitment to the planet.
The world’s biggest landmarks – such as the Sydney Opera House, Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower, Carnaby Street, Buckingham Palace, and Edinburgh Castle – switch off lights as a visual display of their commitment, according to WWF UK.
This year too, almost all of Qatar’s government and private entities will be switching off non-essential lights in their facilities with a fresh resolve to address sustainability-related issues threatening the planet.
As reported by The Peninsula, the official website of Earth Hour states, “Building on last year’s success, participation and growing awareness on climate change, Qatar will continue the hashtag #EarthHourQatar campaign, where people will participate in various earth hour activities across the country. They will also use social media channels to run an online campaign and reach a larger number of people this year.”
A number of luxury hotels and malls in Qatar will recognize Earth Hour 2019 through different innovative programs, apart from pledging to turn off non-essential lights for an hour.
One such event will be at Kahramaa Awareness Park where authorities will not only organize awareness programs on the environment but will also highlight Qatar’s efforts towards sustainability including Kahramaa’s ambitious and successful Tarsheed initiative.

Earlier, during a speech an Earth Hour event, His Excellency the Minister of Municipality and Environment Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie highlighted that the ministry was working diligently through strategic plans consistent with the National Development Plan to preserve the environment and sustain wildlife in accordance with Qatar National Vision 2030, under the wise leadership of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, reported Gulf Times.
