Qatar government planning new body for hiring expat workers

The Qatar government is considering setting up an institution to oversee the recruitment of workers from abroad for both companies and individuals, it has been reported.

According to a report in the Qatar tribune, the body will include representatives from the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MoLSA), Ministry of Economy and Commerce (MEC) and Qatar Chamber.

If it comes into effect, then it will act as a parent body for all recruitment agencies working in the country.

Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani has ordered a study to be undertaken about the project’s feasibility.

If such a body comes into existence, then one can expect a notable reduction in the number of cheating cases of overseas recruits. It is a timely step in the right direction.

QLers, what do you think about this?

It's just another eye-wash public announcement with no time-frame given. Maybe in ten years?

This would be a good move. I hope that it would lead to standardised contracts as per the labour law. However, the issue mainly is not with the rescruitment but the protection of workers' rights once they are in the country.
