Qatar expecting UN to play crucial role in solving Gulf crisis

Qatar's foreign minister has called on United Nations to help resolve the crisis in the Gulf and accused the four Arab countries that have imposed a blockade on Qatar of violating international law.

The Foreign Minister HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres yesterday to discuss ways to enhance joint cooperation between Qatar and the UN, according to local media reports.

Al Thani told reporters that the four blockading countries Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have not taken any steps to solve the crisis.

"Qatar has already stated more than ten times that we want to solve this issue by dialogue, and we are not willing to escalate, and they need to retreat from all their illegal actions," he said.

He vowed that Qatar will spare no effort to overcome the crisis and said "the United Nations is the right platform to start from".

"This is the right place where we have to start to seek all our options in order to find a legal solution. The Security Council, the General Assembly and "all the United Nations mechanisms" can play a role," the foreign minister said.

Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt cut diplomatic ties with Qatar and imposed an illegal air, sea and land blockade on June 5th.
