Qatar has been elected as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee of the Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

According to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Qatar was elected to Group 5b of the Arab Group in competition with Mauritania.

As many as 98 countries participated in the vote, out of which 59 countries voted for Qatar to join 11 other member countries in the new four-year UNESCO session. At the event, half of the 24 members of the government committee were elected.

Director of the Culture and Arts Department of the Ministry of Culture and Sports and head of the Qatari delegation, Hamad Mohamed Al Zakiba expressed his gratitude at the confidence of the international community in Qatar’s efforts to uphold cultural diversity.

He emphasized that the Ministry will continue to support projects that promote the principles and objectives of this important agreement and its commitment to shared cultural values. This would be best reflected in the preparation and organization of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

HE Ambassador Ali Zainal, Qatar's Permanent Representative to UNESCO, said that the confidence of the international community in Qatar affirmed the faith of the country in the content of the Convention signed in 2005 to protect and promote the diversity of cultural expressions.

Under the special framework of the Convention Qatar has played a vital role in forming policies and identifying measures to promote the emergence of dynamic and creative cultural industries and markets throughout the world.

He added that the paper presented by the Qatari delegation highlighted the cultural institutions' activities in the international implementation of the Convention and the initiatives undertaken by Qatar in this regard.

The most noteworthy of Qatar’s efforts in this regard is the 'Cultural Years' initiative that was initiated in 2012 with Japan.

This year – 2019 - is Qatar-India Cultural Year. The project has received great appreciation from various participating nations.

The election came amid the three-day meeting of the Convention on the "Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions" at its seventh session that concluded on yesterday at UNESCO.

In its working paper, the ministry highlighted its focus on intercultural dialogue, the promotion of human rights, and belonging to national identity in exchange for full respect of other cultural identities.

In addition to a number of other cultural initiatives, the paper also underlined the country’s drive toward enriching cultural diversity among the expatriate communities in Qatar, and its support for regional and international co-operation.

The number of parties to the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions is 146 parties and authors from 145 countries and the European Union.

They meet every two years at UNESCO headquarters to study the Convention and its implications and determine the future actions. Qatar joined this agreement in 2009.
