Qatar Charity (QC) has been named the world’s leading charity in support of the Syrian people, in a report by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

The report refers to work until 2013 and covers UN, government and non-governmental organisations that have implemented aid and relief projects for Syrians.

QC has allocated almost $30m since the outbreak of the conflict, higher than allocations by many European countries, including France and Italy.

The amount has benefitted over 1m people: food for 535,000 people, shelter, essential equipment  and Eid clothing for 174,000, health projects for the benefit of 250,000 and educational projects, including Quran centres for the benefit of 58,000 people.

CEO Yousef bin Ahmed Al Kuwari said: “The high international standing achieved by QC in support of the Syrian people, and the assumption of the role of leader among humanitarian and non-governmental organisations across the world, confirm the good reputation of the people of Qatar in philanthropy and relief work, particularly for the Syrian people, whose suffering has been compounded by the ongoing crisis.

“We thank all organisations that have supported us by helping finance relief projects for those affected in Syria and Syrian refugees in neighbouring Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey and Iraq.”

Al Kuwari also thanked Qatar’s leadership for being always ready to support those affected by natural disasters and wars across the world, and residents and citizens of Qatar for their donations.

He stressed the importance of continuing support in the coming period due to the increasing humanitarian needs of displaced and refugee Syrians.

QC’s  ‘Syria, Pain and Hope’ campaign has involved implementation of dozens of projects in the areas of shelter, food, health and education, with over $31m spent between April 2011 and March 2014. Its efforts continue with the launch of a new campaign ‘Have Mercy on Syria Our Dear Syria’, which focuses on children aged above three, who are worst-hit.

The campaign follows the ‘Winter the size of their suffering’ which provided relief to ease suffering caused by the cold, including fuel and winter clothing for 40,000 displaced and refugee Syrians at a cost of about QR2.5m.
