Ministry of Interior issues swimming safety guidelines

The Ministry of Interior (MoI) has issued a slew of safety guidelines for those heading for a beach or a swimming pool for a dip in the summer.

In a post on its Facebook page, the MoI noted that many people love to have a holiday or weekend outing on Qatar’s beaches, where they swim and play with children.

As this is a preferred holiday activity for many, the advisory stressed the need to follow certain safety precautions while spending time on a beach or in a swimming pool.

The MoI has advised people to keep a watchful eye on children, especially the younger ones, because they are not aware of the risks involved.

“Don’t get engaged in reading, swimming, browsing your mobile, etc, when they accompany you,” the advisory said.

The guidelines further stressed that children should not be left unattended even for a moment as “seconds count in preventing death or disability.”

“Never leave a young child unattended near the water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask for permission to go near the water.”

The ministry said swimming pools should be secured with appropriate barriers.

At the same time, it reminded them that barriers are not an

alternative for constant supervision.

The advisory also points out that plastic water wings and rings are not designed to keep swimmers safe, and should never be used in place of a life jacket.

“Make sure that kids are always wearing life jackets when playing in water, are next to it or even on a boat.”

People should avoid swimming alone, the ministry said, adding: “It’s preferable to have someone with you who could provide first-aid.”

It has also reminded people not to use water rings of any type if the water is deep.

For watercraft users, the MoI has said people should ensure that the craft is safe to ride and must wrap the lanyard (a safety device) around their wrist.

People without experience and children below the legal age should not ride a watercraft, the advisory highlighted.

The MoI also reiterated that people should avoid riding in areas meant for swimming and diving, lanes used by ships/fishing vessels and areas specified for marine activities. Besides, they must not engage in acrobatic exercises that may endanger theirs’ and others’ safety, it added.
