The temperature in Abu Samra fell to a new Qatari record low of 1.5 degrees Celsius early yesterday morning.
The previous record of 3.8 degrees was set way back in 1964, in Mesaieed, according to the Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD).
Weathermen reported several other places in Qatar seeing temperatures as low as 5 degrees, thanks to a recent ‘cold wave,’ according to Gulf Times.
According to the Met department, Abu Samra monitoring station registered a low air temperature of 1.5C around 6.10am on Sunday.
The report said that a ‘cold wave’ had affected the country since February 1. As a result, temperatures have dropped across the country.
Until 5.40am on Sunday, the wind speed had remained moderate and the temperature low (9.5C). But things changed soon after and the wind direction shifted, bringing air from land and resulting in a ‘dramatic’ drop in temperature — over 7.5C — within 30 minutes.
The air monitoring station in Abu Samra is one of the Meteorology department’s most modern stations.
Another cold night and light rain predicted
On Monday, the country is likely to witness another cold night and there are also chances of light rain in the evening.
Strong winds and high seas are also likely in offshore areas. The wind speed in these areas may go up to 23knots at night, with the sea level rising to 7ft in some places.
Please be careful, everybody. Take care in this adverse climate!
As temperatures drop, please remember not to bring your Charcoal BBQ inside, or leave your gas stove running for heat. You can get Carbon Monoxide Posioning while sleeping and die.
